Hi guy's I know the 2nd gen has an issue with the tailgate bending and had to be reinforced. Do you know if this had been fixed in the 3rd gen or does it need to be reinforced? Becuase I plan on towing my bike back from storage after the winter.

I think the 3rd gen tailgate is way stronger than the 2nd gen and doubt it needs reinforcement!

I took off the tailgate cover to check it out and it's alot better than my 2nd gen was!

So it doesn't use the same bent standoffs and glue?

It does not, I didn't take a picture of it but I'll have to take it off again and get a pic!

Yeah, thanks for offering that, I'm sure others would be interested too. Coming from an 01 to the 15, I was shocked at how flimsy it was, despite having heard the stories.

I bent the hell out of my 02 tailgate loading large stones into the back. When I test drove the 16 the tailgate seemed far more substantial but it's tough to know how strong it is until you drop a 100 lb rock on it.

I heard the fixed the issue on the 2nd gen in the later years and the 3rd gen tailgate is a lot more beefy.

I just got a 15 in August, and the interior structure is flimsy as fuck. With the fiberglas cover off, I could easily flex it with my hand with minimal pressure.

Well perhaps they said they fixed it, but who defined what fixed is? I haven't seen anything definitive on this.

Yeah, without documentation or data, I discount such claims.

I just picked up my 2016 DCSB OR on friday and I've been walking on the tailgate and tried jumping up and down on the middle of it (175 lbs) and it is definitely far stronger than my 02 Tacoma. I can't speak to strength relative to the 2nd Gen though. It did flex a little when I jumped on it, as one might expect.

I still want to reinforce my tailgate, but Mobtown offroad said they're too busy to do it. Anyone have an idea on who I might petition to build a reinforcement assembly?

I'm going to put really heavy stones onto it on the way in and out of the bed.

What does he plan on using it for?

    Probably using it. ;)

You could try @RelentlessFab, not sure if he has an interest in this item for third gen trucks, but he does great work.

Sorry man, but I can't think of anything that will fit in that bed that you can't drive over the tailgate with.

I went thru pep boys with a crap magnet, got it all
I carried this bike across the country, 3100 miles, the rear wheel was on the tailgate. No bending. I did put a 4' long 2x6 under the rear wheel. Bike weighed 400 lbs
