I understand now. The dealership stole your locked tailgate while you were sleeping, and you've got crappy insurance on a new truck. Totally believable.

    Wait, what?
Your insurance only covers total loss?
Double check your policy, this doesn't sound right. I'm sure you have comprehensive on a brand new truck right?
It sounds like you don't have comp, a ridiculously high deductible, or your agent is trying to talk you out of making a claim for his benefit.

They might get offended if they're arrested...and of course, we certainly can't have that. I mean, criminals are people too.

What if they steal the truck and leave the tailgate ? I guess you would not be covered .

Sucks OP, same happened to me. I went through insurance to get a new one, took close to 4 weeks to get my truck back from the shop (the body shops fault) and after my 1000 dollar deductible it was close to 3,000 bucks for my insurance.

My anti-theft device was a little pricey. About $800 with glow in the dark dots and .45 on it.

Your anti theft device sounds like it's doing it's job part time, although effective when awake and nearby.

Check companies that sell caps. Companies get contractor caps on that removes the tailgates and they leave the tailgates at the shops. Contact them and see if they have any laying around

Yup, and put it on with the head of the bolt towards the bed of the truck. You'll need an open end wrench to tighten it, which I doubt the average tweaker carries around.

This. I damaged my Gen2 gate and found one on Craigslist from a local contractor that replaces their Tacoma gates with a cap. Actually searching for one now for my Gen3 that was just backed into. I think I paid around $200 for the previous one and would rather do that again than file a claim on my insurance.

Still doesn't make sense, are you saying you canceled a policy, without having a new one in place? My state (and I believe many others) require your insurance to cover a new vehicle for a certain amount of time, like a month, while you get your paperwork, plates, and registration in order. I don't know of any banks that will let you buy without insurance, or drop without having a new company established.

It only works when you got eyes on the vehicle, and when you got the sack to use it. This is the internet, so I have zero faith in anyone.

we’ve had this thread before. It’s always a fun laugh.
