    I think op has a pop and lock, as he said he checked it manually also. So, couldn't you cut the wires, get a small battery (maybe even a 9 volt), touch wires to battery and unlock the tailgate and then simply remove?

    So, is the consensus that if the factory tailgate lock is locked, a thief would have to bust the lock in order to be able to open, remove, and steal the tailgate?

    They are easily bypassed with a screwdriver
    Tailgate comes off in literally 5 seconds or less. By the time you hear a noise, go out to look, your tailgate is long gone.
    Luckily for you, you can most likely go to your local body shop and buy it back for a few hundred. Ask your insurance company how prevalent it is and you'd be shocked.
