    Morning,

Looking to add a tailgate strut to assist with open / close on my 2016. The OEM assist is toast in the hinges and apparently you need to buy new hinges and paint them to remedy that issue.

Does anyone make a strut to fit 2016 to 2023 similar to below?

    TIA Garr

That is likely only to help control the opening. Closing is likely to be much harder as you will be overcoming the gas spring also.

I believe you only need to replace the dampener parts in the hinge, not the hinge itself.

I had DeeZee gas spring on my Ram. It slows when opening and helps on closing. Fantastic product. Ram should have come with it!

    I stand corrected. Thanks!

Must have some overcenter goodness designed in there?

I have the OEM it works well opening but you have to heave up a bit to close it.

    It’s a gas spring, not a shock

Think of it just like a regular spring, they only apply force in one direction. In this case they are always trying to close the tailgate, pulling it up

They are used in the rear hatch of most suvs, some trunks, truck cap rear window, etc

Quite familiar with gas springs. They only work in one direction, thus my original comment.

Well now I am confused, how do you think they will add resistance when you close the tailgate if they are pulling it up?

Even when not attached, gas springs extend slowly. So, I assumed the action was only on opening / extending. It seems these work in the opposite way. Opening / contracting. The extension helps the TG close.

i had added one to my old ranger

maybe it was because i used a model built for a silverado--it was a genuine deezee model though-- but it definitely did not help going up. it was really just an oil-filled shock that added resistance going down, and got bypassed when pushing the tailgate back up.

to reduce the lifting force, one really needs to add a torsion bar within the tailgate, which is not even close to an easy process.
