Just added one clamp to each side. Cost me $2.99. Of course if someone really wants the tailgate then can probably rip it off but this will definitely force them to try harder lol. Thanks for the mod and writeup.

You only need it on the passenger side, so you can sell the extra, or keep it as a spare. :)

Great idea! This was my first mod. I did the same thing after seeing this, but I did one more thing to piss off or deter thieves. After I took off the plastic key, I stripped the end with a file to the point where the key was useless. It's been about 8 months since I've added the clamp and is still tight.

The great thing about this mod is that even if it doesn't stop the tailgate theft it will certainly slow a thief down and it may be enough time passerby's to notice it or the alarm may go off, etc. I did mine as soon as I read the post, used a bicycle innertube to stretch over the tailgate end before I put the clamp on so the paint wouldn't crack. Living in Nova Scotia means rust, rust, rust.

Did the hoseclamp as soon as I read this as well. The wifey looked at me like I was crazy until I showed her the video. Feel much better now esp when I have to park away from my apartment

Just did the hose clamp security mod last night. Used the keyed type and put foam pipe insulation under the clamp. Took about 10 minutes. Great mod! And...as I am meckanikallee challenged.........I'm very surprised it went so well

    Thanks!

I put the clamp on mine as soon as I saw this thread about this time last year. I felt better but I feel even better since putting on the Pop & Lock tailgate lock.

Just did the hose clamp mod. I have way too much time on my hands today so I figured I would add a detailed write up.

Here's what you need (forgot to put the hose clamp in the picture):
    •Flat head screw driver
    •box cutter
    •bicycle tube
    •hose clamp
    [IMG]

To prevent scratching I put bicycle tubing under the clamp. I cut a length of tubing about 5" long. Then I sliced the tube sideways in half so that it wasn't as thick to ensure the clamp had clearance.

Then I just put the clamp over the tubing and tightened it.

    Hope this helps.

Installed mine yesterday. This is a very easy and hopefully effective fix.

Can't wait to do this. My new Tacoma is a replacement for my trusty '88 that was stolen a few weeks ago in Ensenada. Needless to say I'm a bit paranoid.

You can. It is an after market PL5300 from Pop and Lock. It fits all second gen Tacos and will accept the tailgate camera on the '09 and '10's. I have both the hose clamps as well as the PL5300. Here is a pic of mine. It is a very easy installation.

I just installed this on mine. Thanks for the neat/very cheap tip. Wal-Mart here doesn't have E-Z clamps so I had to get normal ones from Home Deport. Oh well, it's not as safe since anyone with a screw driver can take it off but better than nothing I suppose.

I really wish toyota just had put a lock on the tailgate honestly... for 30k you think they would!
