Thanks for the info. Bought a set of key hose clamps from autozone for $3 on the way home from work. Put a layer of double thick electrical tape down first and then put the clamp over it.

Hopefully the crooks don't wise up and start carrying around a key for these things.

a quick note for future hose-clampers: i didn't realize the hose clamp only works on the passenger side of the tailgate—you can only use one; the other size is different.

The other side is not slotted so a clamp is not necessary on driver's side.

does anyone know the key hose clamp number from autozone for the tacoma tail gate? I need to order it online as I live in Canada and can not find it anywhere here.

    Thanks.

Has Toyota address this problem yet?

Just wondering if I need to do this on my 2013?

    Thanks,

    Jay

I did it on my '13 about a week ago after seeing the videos the OP posted and testing "stealing" my own tailgate. It's a quick and easy mod. Rather spend $2 for the clamp than spend ??? on a brand new tailgate and shipping etc. Just my .02

It's not a problem per say. But if you're asking if they've installed a tailgate lock in the handle...no they haven't. So pick up a pop lock and do this mod...maybe use a large washer at the cable connection if you want. That's a three layer security.

I've never even thought of stealing someone's tailgate, or how easy that would be! That's crazy! Thanks for the heads up!

The gatekeeper will actually fit over the clamp. I left the clamp on with it...

pic of it on the old 05 AC but was moved over to the 08 RC..........

Those 2 + the popnlock latch and the cable washer mod = thiefs looking elsewhere. Also do the storage cubby lock mod so those go nowhere.

Stupid question probably, has anyone found a site that sells just the plastic keys? I know I can just buy more clamps with the keys however I have a second I can use for now.

Thanks for posting this. Very useful and easy.

And thank you for the suggestion. I put mine in an angle that can only be reached while the tailgate is partially opened.

Did the same thing after seeing your post.

    Great forum!

Great mod, I did mine today.
I got my clamps at Discount Auto for $2.50 and they have the removable key tool.
They DO NOT rub at all and it rest securely on the tailgate hinge housing.

Does NOT fit on my 2014! Causes the tailgate to bulge out on the installed side and would cause paint damage...returned!

Just installed a stainless hose clamp with heat-shrink tubing around the band.
