You only need to do the passenger (right) side.

I had my tailgate stolen and now I have the clamp and a Pop & Lock 8540.

Installed Cooper At/3's (265/70R16) and ProComp 7089 Rims. Tinted front windows. Did the Fog Light Anytime mod. Did the tailgate mod. Added running boards. Adding sound Deadening from RAAMaudio. Replacing stock speakers with Polk Audio DB6501's.
I the 47 years I've owned a truck, I have never removed the tailgate.... So... Mod done to both sides. Thanks for the tip.

Brought home a 2015 Prerunner DC TRD sport last week. Great info on this forum! Started researching tailgate lock options. Looks like Pop & Lock just came out with a new tailgate theft prevention lock, "The Gate Defender". It's a keyed slip on lock for the passenger side hinge. Just ordered one from the pop & lock website. Not cheap but looks good. I'll report back here once I have it installed. Here's the link http://www.popandlock.net/the-gate-defender

I have owned my truck for 1 1/2 years and just thought I was safe since there is a keyed lock on my tailgate (does not appear to be a Pop & Lock). Yesterday I went to open the tailgate forgetting it was "locked" and I thought, "man this latch is stiff" but with little extra effort it opened. I realized what was going on and tried to open it unlocked and locked. Doesn't take much extra to open in the locked position. I am considering myself lucky and heading to Wal Mart for a hose clamp during lunch! This is a great post and I am glad I found it!

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Installed the Pop&Lock gate defender. Did not need the included spacer on my 15 Prerunner. Lock is easy to install and Tailgate opens/closes like normal. Nice quality unit. Highly recommended if you want some more peace of mind over the hose clamp mod.

I ordered one of the new Pop&Lock Gate Defender as mentioned by greener380 above (and mostly because I was following this thread.) It arrived last night. I replaced the hose clamp I had been using, and with the GD new lock in place it seems as secure as anything. I jostled it around for a few minutes to try and remove the tailgate and it definitely isn't coming off without the key. I'd second the recommendation. Note: I did use the spacer.

The stuff I'm learning on this site! After seeing that video I had to go out and make sure my tailgate was still on there! Late night trip to wally world perhaps...

    Yes, I sold my '13 Taco. :'(
Added 20hp with this install today. Truck feels amazing. Jk...

I already have the Pop & Lock PL5400 tailgate handle lock on my truck, but decided to slap on the added insurance of their PL9900 GateDefender today.

Like a few posts above me, I didn't need that included spacer/ring on my 2013 Tacoma to install it.

I did throw a layer of electrical tape on the inside of the metal hasp just because I know that's a part that will see some rubbing. Totally not necessary, but just my OCD. That extra step was about the longest part of the install LOL.

Literally put it on in 15 seconds:

Tailgate closes cleanly, like it isn't even there. ;)

I'm new here, I just bought my 1st Tacoma, an 09, so don't bite me, but looking at the picture, when the key is removed, the clamp looks like a regular aviation clamp , if they have a screw driver, can't they just unscrew the clamp?

Yes, they can unscrew it (if they have a screwdriver). But that would take much longer than the 3 seconds it takes to just lift and go with it.
The clamp is a deterrent. If you want to go more secure, I think there are a few people that have done locks. What you put in there really depends on the area you live/park your truck in.

I just bought my Tacoma and found this forum. This is one of the first threads I read and I had no idea tailgate thefts were so popular and easy to do. I looked at my tailgate and sure enough, had it unhitched from the truck in under a minute. It makes sense though that thieves would target these tailgates especially with the backup camera installed. I just ordered the Pop & Lock PL9900 and hope it will work okay. In the meantime, I will install the clamp too. Thanks!

I'm going to give it a shot, tail gate theft worries me working on construction sites!
