I went with the SaBellCo lock system. It was super easy to install and seems completely secure.

I am installing the factory lock that goes with the fob. That looks nice as well. I will look into that

Being brand new to Tacoma ownership, do you need to clamp/secure the tailgate on both sides or just the passenger side as shown in the video? Also, is this applicable to all years of Tacoma? Just asking since this original post is 11 years old.

$1.25 for a hose clamp and my first mod is complete.

Now, do I take the time to paint the clamp so it'll match the body color....

Great information! I have long questioned what to do with the fact that the Tacoma tailgate is a prime target for thieves. First post here - finally joining Tacomaworld after years of using the site.

Thanks to the OP and this community, we just made the first mod to our new-to-us Taco. We’ll likely upgrade to the SaBellCo system, but we figured this was a cheap, easy, and critical initial mod.

ETA: I realized I may have put it on the wrong side, so to cover my bases. I used the second clamp from the package to secure the other end of the gate. Likely overkill, but it’ll do for now.

Does this still apply to 2020 models?

As far as locks go there are no differences between 2019 and 2020

I would have never thought of this . I just took my locking camper top off so I should probably do this.

Sad but here is a video from my customer:

It happens fast and they do not care. Just met up with another member, was going to install it for him but when I pulled up there was no tailgate.

Do something, Find Something even if it is not our lock.

I used this mod and at least it takes a few more seconds compared to factory to steal it!

Chris, I do appreciate the heads up on tailgate theft but I don't see why the creep can't just unscrew the clamp. It's not really locked. Seems like a chain and padlock would be a better option. Now I am really worried about it though and only minutes ago I was blissfully unconcerned.
Only a few days ago someone commented to me that my truck "even has a good tailgate!". I was wondering what was so notable about that? Now I know.

First mod complete! Spent all of $1.37 on an SAE #20 hose clamp at my local Lowe’s. Even though I plan on keeping the tailgate locked it’s added piece of mind just in case... Thanks Tacomaworld!!!
