Could anyone please confirm the best options for a 23 SR, please? Don't want to get something that won't fit. Thanks!

My wife and I found a different solution that might be a sleeker. So grab some wahsers and a starbit and take off the upper cable hinge on both sides (do it one at a time). Refer to the picture, it's pretty straight forward and super easy.

I wouldn't think so, mine just doesn't have a locking tailgate.

I just bought an OEM auto tailgate lock and installed it. Relatively easy and nice to have tailgate lock with the rest of the vehicle.

Use as a spacer under the big fender-washer: to add an end to a coaxial cable people use a ring that is squeezed/compressed. Perfect fit around the retaining bolt. Look at Lowes in the "home wiring, phone and coaxial cables" section.

OPTIMUS_TACO, Do you plan to leave your tailgate up or down? If down, then the lock does nothing to protect the tailgate from being stolen. I also have the remote/electric lock on my Tacoma, but still need to do some mod to protect the tailgate.

    Agreed!

For anyone looking to add the remote/electric tailgate lock, do yourself a favor and get the Toyota OEM kit for this. I paid $148 after tax, so it's dollars (US) more than the Pop & Lock ($128 + shipping), is OEM, locks/unlocks the same as the passenger doors, was easy to install (1.5 hours my first time), and the instructions are spot on.

I saw this as I'm a new Taco owner. Haven't made it to Wally World yet but living where I do, I need to secure my tailgate. Went digging through my hose clamps and found a couple with 1/4 inch heads. So I positioned them where the only way to loosen them is to use a 1/4" open end wrench. And even with that you have to turn the wrench back and forth to get a bite on the head.

Later in the thread there is a description of how make removal of the cables from the gate bit more difficult. That keeps them from easily just dropping the tailgate to slam into the bumper.

So it appears that this thread was started in February of 2009, and this is STILL a problem on Tacomas 15 YEARS LATER?!?!:facepalm:WTH Toyota?!!! Wow! SMH.

Okay, I did not read through the 70 pages of comments because my mind is still blown. I'm going to assume that if I keep my tailgate locked, I'm good to go? My tailgate is safe??

That would be a bad assumption as they punch the lock and get it. Put something else on as a backup, plenty of options available

    Hi Folks,

Here is another alternative to tailgate theft found on ebay, not sure how it will hold up but looks like a fairly secure lock. If you install it you should look to use a different bolt vs. the 12mm hex

    hey fellas,
I'm a beginner with this pubic forum setting, finding myself gifted sone tools from Father N Law (a little pressure I've never been the mechanic , not knowing the chosen word for the "do-hicky" bolt the tires on...
    point is, I learned;
wheel studs are the catalog name & Numbers rating idifferences f you will, relates to how the bolt the was machined for strength?
    to hold the tire
Anyway, there was made mention bad retailers for tailgates?
where f(or referral) would you suggest...I find it very hard to locate any T100s in the UpullIT type yards.... trusted tailgates?
    I'm 2nd owner of 95 T100 2.7 L 4 cyl 5 speed manual 2 WD reg cab
It was sandwiched by 2 trash trucks as the rear hit/pushed it into another trash truck. tailgate was DOA, and I believe my grill to be of Tacoma origin.
Recommended resource for tailgates? & possibly those special rods to drop the spare tire?

    thank you

My question is why there is such a market for stolen tailgates? Did Toyota build the gate out of solid gold or something?
