I don't know why the ends won't screw into each other either. I watched the video again & it shows you just attach the ends & it screws back together.

Finally!! I think part of my problem was i turned the clamp a little more vertical than horizonal & it came together. I remember in the vid that Chris had his kinda vertical. I know it sounds crazy but it worked for me. Thanks for all the feedback from everyone & thanks for sharing your idea Chris. Great forum. Lots of good ideas here.

I think I may get a regular clamp (instead of the keyed type), grind the hex points smooth on the sides, put it on with a screwdriver - and then fill the screwdriver slot with JB Weld. That way, if the would-be thief does have tools with him, they still won't do him any good.

Hahaha! That may seem to be a bit overkill to me now but when you see the thing down and disconnected I'll be eating my words!

I installed mine last nigh. I bought the clamps from Home Depot ($1.15 each) I put one on each side.

Nice and easy to install. Thanks for the tip.

hey I've never used or seen those clamps, just curious can you take them off when you want, in case you need the tailgate off, or do you have to cut it off?

hose clamps are easy to take off, either have a hex key w/ a slot or you can get the special ones with the triangle key. either way if you leave them as they are, very simple to take off without cutting

I know theres been some discussion between bike tubing, electrical tape and so on for what to put inside the hose clamp, at home depot I bought some polyolefin heat shrink tubing 1/2 inch that looks like it'll be perfect, three strips were 3.29 here in canada, so about a nickle to you guys, thought maybe you guys would find this useful

I was at home depot today, heres probably the smallest tubing of rubber you'll find its three inch polypropalane or something, I don't have it with me right now, but its in the pic its really really thin, and can shrink if heated, I'm guessing with the help of a heat gun but I don'thave one, and I'm not worried about it. So just thougth you guys might be interested, and I've now learned to add pics too so heres the gear

I did the clamp install last fall using regular clamps because thats all I could find. I fill the slots with JB Weld and used a hex driver to install. I then took a small piece of heat shrink tubing and shrunk in over the hex head. So now a slot screw driver won't work and you have to cut off the heat shrink to get a hex head driver. Pretty easy to do if you need to but maybe too time consuming for a thief.

BTW, not knowing any better I did both sides and I am now seeing that maybe doing the driver's side does nothing. Is that true?

Yep. Doing the driver side does nothing.

Maybe the thief doesn't know that and it will further discourage them. Anyhoo, only cost a clamp and doesn't interfere with anything. Plus, I like the earlier post from someone who also did this to "balance the weight." :D
