Is using the factory lock still enough to deter most thefts or is it still pretty easy to steal when locked?

do you understand how the 'credit card trick' works on a normal door latch? same concept on these tailgate latches.

the lock only locks the handle, not the latches on either side.

meaning this tool, properly applied, ought to open a locked tailgate:
    https://smile.amazon.com/Wallet-Shi...69&sprefix=lockpick+latch+tool,aps,112&sr=8-2

as with anything, ease of theft really comes down to how committed and/or prepared the thief is.

the idea with any theft prevention is not to eliminate theft, that's nearly impossible. but prevention is about making things enough of an obvious pain in the butt that it discourages the thief from continuing. it's also good to do in layers, so if they bypass one technique, they immediately hit the next technique.

Boggles my mind that one couldn't get a job and make more money in the long run without getting the law chasing you up a tree.
But drug addicts don't think clearly.

Meth heads don't pass drug tests, and everyone is against them or out to get them. Gotta "work" for cash so they can't be tracked.

Not to mention that they can't exactly be relied on to get up and get to work every day?

Criminals don't steal from bad neighbor hoods, they go to the good ones and steal
