My favorite local trailhead in a city-park with access to 40 miles of trail is only 13 miles from my apartment, which makes daily visits easy. There are houses beside the trail which on occasion ask the rangers to close the "in" gates to the parking lot at 7 PM, but much of the time the in-gates stay open 24 hours so night hikes are always an option. There is a 1 mile stretch between those houses and the next houses west, just desert space between.

But I am told just across from that trailhead parking lot will soon be "high density" housing ... apartments included. I fear terribly that 20-something yutzes will move in, walk across the street to the trail at midnight and be the annoying asses we expect them to be. The existing houses will invoke the right to have the trails "closed" at 11 PM with tickets issued for violators.

    Damn

One possible idea is to remove the plastic skin and maybe etch some identifying combination of letters/numbers (not a SS# or something like that), photograph it, and replace the skin. Not quite as hip as Air Tagging of course, but an old friend used to do this with all his car audio gear and actually recovered his stuff after it was stolen this way.

As a lifelong MA resident (except a year in NY when I was little), I'd rather give that a shot versus freeze my wang off in damn near zero or less here. I have a pool and AC. About 14 years ago it hit 107 here on a Friday, I was at an outdoor concert all day long.

As an aside, I only stay in MA because my parents are here, refuse to move, and really do need help with stuff often enough now at their age..not because I enjoy the weather and "other" stuff let's just say.

Maybe we should etch our name, VIN, or something on to the tailgate somewhere. Take pics. Then, if we suspect ours is on Craigslist the law might help?

Been there, done that...easy money. That's a cake walk compared to 100 with 90% humidity that we deal with.

Question if you lock your tailgate with the key and they punch the lock and get your tailgate, does the autolocking mechanism prevent them from doing the same think and punching the lock?

OP sorry to hear your tailgate was stolen twice. I have personally met up with a few folks who experienced the same pure brutality. Another person bought our lock after his tailgate stolen at the funeral home while he was at his mothers service. They were so nice to leave him with the hose clamp. The guy called me and was livid, I was at a loss for words but I did install it for him after he got his replacement and he did have a very nice Cement LB with a manual transmissions.
