Donahoe CO's, Deaver leaf paks, Lockright Locker, All Pro body armor ( sliders, front and rear bumpers ), All Pro under belly skids, Warn M8K w/Masterpull synthetic line, Dual Optima battery system, 4 ea LightForce Striker 170 offroad lights, 8 ea wired rock lights, and plenty more I'm sure
when I enter a 1996 Tacoma into the " vehicle compatibility link " it says it is not compatible.

But that link is compatible for 2001 - 2004 models.

It'll likely fit physically without any concern...
But the wiring at the tail light's housing will need be altered.

It has to do with having dual ground wires.
Others have re-wired them... but not I.

Because of wiring differences of the three 1st gen model designs...
    1995.5 - 1997, 1998 - 2000, 2001 - 2004
I feel properly wired tail lights will be easier to install.

But I realize some styles of tail lights are not wired for the earlier models years.
    and so would require altercation.

I personally don't wish for more work when I purchase something new.

But if re-wiring tail lights floats one's boat... have at it.

Should be easy to find google discussion regarding the re-wiring
from early models Tacoma to later 1st gen models.
But I'm not sure about re-wiring newer 1st gen models to older Tacoma models.
It could be quite challenging - difficult.

Most anything can be fitted if ya have the mind...
but how much effort does one wish to expel
in order to make them fit/work properly ?

I have these exact one's installed on My truck('99) and they are plug and play for me. Before i did my swap i did some research and found info from people who have installed tailights meant for different series of 1st gens- 95.5-97, 98-00, 01-04. The ground wiring issue is the problem that exist with the compatability of interchanging tailights between the years of 1st gens as you mentioned before @TacoDell. Most the info I found of people doing this swap came from ttora, customtacos, tw, and pirate. I found this same info to be true across the board-

The issue is only found for those using stock 95.5-00 tailights on a 01-04 Tacoma, as the 01-04 had/needs the extra grounding wire . Anyone that has used a stock 01-04 tailight on a 95.5-00 is a plug n play mod and has no issue and NO rewiring is necessary.

    ( 01-04 fits n functions on 95.5-00)

    ( 95.5 - 00 fits but DOES NOT function properly on 01-04)

Here is one of many threads on the web with guys who have successfully done the swap with no wiring issues. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tail-light-interchange-questions.403188/

Also if you are trying to run let's say a 98-00 tailight on a 95.5-97 that will also work fine or vice versa with out having to do any modified wiring. I have personally found this to be true through my own experience.

One problem I bet people come across with aftermarket is sometimes the supplier does not differentiate between the years on there site of what exact 1st gen these are meant for they will just put 95-04. So some may come into a problem. I have personally seen suppliers list on there site stating for different or various parts that- "this part will not fit your vehicle"... but we know for fact it most definitely will. As for the the spyder brand lights in question, if you go on spyder website they state these lights are for 95-00. Here is the ones on Amazon I found that state they fit 95-00 @aeok18109 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004VTZVO6?fp=1&pc_redir=T1

For the most part people want the newer look of the stock 01-04 tailights on there 95-00 taco, so it's not a issue. I have also read of some that want the older "flatter" style lens on there 01-04 so without having to deal with the wiring issue it's was pretty easy for them to just swap the lenses over only and that seemed to work just fine as well.

....sorry for the long post :anonymous:
