On Tues they told him he was on the hook for $3-4k if he couldn't produce any receipts

Sounds to me like they explained his options pretty well in advance

Right, but with how fast they told him corporate said no and the fact that they later started the repair without his approval tells me the service advisor didnt really ask toyota first. Without records for service they are within their rights to deny a warranty, im just saying the timeline and how it was handled is funky.

Even on warranty and recall work you have to sign the work order to OK it, it just shows the cost as $0.

The service writer has seen this type of problem before and knows corporate is going to need receipts. That's his job, he's trained to not bug corporate until he's got the nessecary paperwork. Not his first rodeo trying to get them to cover stuff. Once he knows the customer has some receipts they get started on the work because they know it will be covered. He's trying to save time and get the vehicle repaired asap

He starts the repair without customer authorization or having it written down that its contingent on proof of maintenance and if the customer cant produce receipts afterwards he does what ? Dont release the car untill its paid based on?

Maybe I misread the timeline but it sounded like once the service writer knew the cust had receipts (verbal or whatever) he told the tech to start the work

For a $4k job hes going to start work on a verbal, "yeah I got the receipts at home"

Even so, the customer needs to be notified first of work being started. Ive had stuff done before where they call me to get the go ahead and confirm changes to cost, but thats after I signed something when dropping off the car saying the quoted price can change and ive agreed to the general work being done.

Im glad they are covering it and everything is working out but the way things went down do not make sense in a franchised dealership.

    This.
I provided the receipts and the the repair was made, free of any charges, including a Tacoma rental(base model).
Just wanted everyone to know, please keep some proof of maintenance.
The service manager made it clear to that Mama Toyota wants some proof you are taking care of your vehicle.
Even if I did not have the receipts, once they got into my vehicle, any mechanic worth his salt could plainly see this truck was being properly maintained.
That said, my mechanic said he suspects that the dealer may be double dipping, paid by Toyota fore the repair and by you. Not sure if that is true, but plausible.
    Any way.
I picked my truck up Friday! That's in the shop for a total of 4 days.
    All seems well except.....
I don't recall seeing these two bolt holes vacant. Perhaps they have a box a spare parts after the re-assembly?
Is there something missing? Or I am just getting old and don't recollect seeing something here..
Passenger side valve cover, one in front of the air box, behind the dip stick, and one behind the air filter box, two bolts MIA?
Can someone please pop the hood on their 3.5 and take look and get back to me?
    Thanks

Mine doesn't have any bolts in those holes either. Glad this all worked out for you, now start enjoying your truck again! :D
