Just have to wait and see, but I’m placing my bets on the 2.4. I can make a few indirect comparisons that should play out similarly to the Tacoma. My 4.0 frontier had significantly more balls than the 3.5 did. My brother’s Ranger 2.3 smoked my frontier. I had him for about a second until the turbo kicked in. That 2.3L in the Ranger hits peak torque at 3200 rpm, while the Tacoma will reach it at 1700 rpm (same peak torque of 310 ft lbs). 2.4L in the taco has 8 more HP than the 2.3L Ranger. Obviously we’re comparing different brands here but I think I’ll perform similarly.

I have a feeling the new Tacoma engine will be really nice to drive power wise, but we’ll see.

They dropped V8 from 2th Gen Tundra and put turbo charged V6. Which is garbage, and has issues, Tundra went from reliability & power to blowing up engines on highways.

That truck is over 5K pounds and has 3.4 L V6. Basically 4runner has bigger engine than truck that is going into full size category xD

Toyota is making same mistake here too, putting smaller and turbo charged engine into the TRUCK, which is going into medium size trucks.

I'm optimistic about it. It'll be subtle because without looking it up I'm guessing the 4th gen gained a little bit of weight, but it most definitely gained a couple of gears too. In the end I think you're right, I think the drivetrain will be solid.

I still think it's ugly, but I'm optimistic about what's happening under the hood.

I’m well aware that the new Tundra has a twin turbo 3.5L V6. My point is I don’t know where you have any proof of them blowing up on highways. How many have blown up? You know the 3.5L in the Tacoma has blown up before too, right? You know the old 5.7L had its own fair share of problems also, right?

Also, before making assumptions, you should watch the Car Care Nut video about the new turbo motor going in the Tacoma. It is not the same design as the 3.5L twin turbo. The 3.5 has I believe electronic wastegate valves and those are being problematic. The 2.4L in the Tacoma will have vacuum operated wastegate which is more conventional. I bet this new engine will be extremely successful.

I should clarify that I think the detuned model (SR/SR5 - 222HP/265TQ) will be significantly less impressive. I think the 278HP/310TQ motto will be really good though.

I’m still waiting to see the gear ratios and such. There is practically no info out about this truck and it hits the dealers next month supposedly. That’s kind of shocking.

    Its 3.4 V6 in Tundra, not 3.5L :)

I don't need to watch sht, you know why 4runner still has 4.0 V6? and costs almost as much as Tundra? Because its still made in Japan and Japanese engineers aren't morons. Now go and find 4runner engine failure.

We just have to wait and see, this is only way we can see how it goes.

That seems to be the new norm for model releases. I thought the bronco and it's multi-year delays wasn't going to happen until it suddenly started appearing on showroom floors. Most new cars these days, it seems like the hard stats don't get released until after the actual car is being parked on consumer driveways.

I knew the Bronco trans and axle ratios in early 2020 when it was announced - they didn’t hit the dealers until sometime in early to mid 2021. I think it’s odd to not have any important specs yet, but oh well.

    Its 3.5.

OK don’t watch anything, doesn’t really matter though you would appear more educated. When you read the technical document and watch the video on the specifics of the new engine, it gives you the feeling that it’s well designed.

I’m sure the 4Runner still having the 4.0 probably has nothing to do with Japanese engineer decisions.

Edit: Wait I remember seeing an LS swap. To counter that I’d need to recommend a ZZ632.

Good to know. Haven’t seen that, so thanks for warning me. I did go through some of his started threads and they’re all mostly beginner topics, so I probably shouldn’t be arguing about the technical data of the new engine with this feller anyways.

Dude is hard charging that Tundra has 3.5L when it does not lol. Some people really live in their head.

Didn't know if people who offends you were troll, Karen. Thankfully I can report and move on though, I won't be calling no manager.

At least what’s in my head is correct. Read and learn. Straight from Toyota.
