i was wondering the same thing and my guess is that you could surveil anyone for any nefarious reason. Seems small enough to slip onto anyone’s person or vehicle.

I believe they are referring to them being used by the perpetrators themselves. I read an article a while back that thieves were placing them hidden on other peoples vehicles so that they could track their whereabouts.

That sounds nefarious to me. Yeah, I can see all kinds of questionable uses for these things.

    OP, i feel you.

They tried to steal mine last year and my friend 4runner. Thankfully just damaged the drivers door and were not able to get in. They did not use the fob signal to try and gain access.

They were able to get a neighbours Highlander and a neighbours Range Rover.

To all the shit talkers - these are not joy rides. They are stealing them, driving to a port, and shipping them to Africa. It's been happening for years, but really ramped up the last 3 years. Once they get to Africa, they leave the Ontario plates on the car and still drive it around! Insane. Also, to the smart kids suggesting we blow someones head off with a shotty... is it really worth going to prison for life over a vehicle? Insurance is going to cover the replacement...

    Oh look, another mod....

Now, I'm not saying that you should do that, but if you did, that thief would stop stealing. You have neutralized the problem.

Sorry to hear OP. I just started parking mine in my garage last week… mostly to keep the paint nice for longer in the hot Southern California summer sun. But this thread is a reminder that thieves are everywhere unfortunately. Makes me think about what would happen if my tacoma got stolen… Would insurance give me the proper replacement value with all this inflation (I mean in reality, the truck is worth more than what I paid new a year and a half ago)? How long would it take to even be able to find another comparable Tacoma right now with all the shortages on the lots?… and then there are the dealers overcharging with their “market adjustments” on new vehicles, which have become the norm in here in Socal. I’d probably lose most of the money I’ve spent on mods, except for my camper shell, and that’s only because I specifically added it to my insurance when I got it. No more cement color either, not that that would be huge deal, but I like my color. This all just makes me realize our trucks aren’t so easily replaceable right now.

I park my 3rd gen 4runner in the driveway and I put a steering wheel club on it. If I know I’m not driving it for a week or longer, I’ll sometimes also pull the EFI fuse just to make sure even if they bother to cut the steering wheel or the club, they better have more time and some mechanic know-how to figure out why it won’t start (not to mention a spare EFI fuse in their pocket, lol). Hopefully that would be enough to make them move onto another target (or get caught in the act because it turned a 5 minute job into “not gonna happen tonight”).

    Very sorry to hear OP.

-This is an known issue in this part of Canada. Especially port city's.

-The OBD port is the biggest liability with our trucks.

-These are not joy riders. They are part of an organized crime ring that send the vehicles to Africa as mentioned previously by @CanadaToy

    - If they really want your vehicle, they will take it.

    - Just make sure to have insurance and take actions to slow them down or deter and hopefully they just move on.

I always turn my FOB off after locking the truck & use a club.

All you need to know about these organized thieves and how easy it is to steal your Tacoma you can read here. How to keep your truck safe from car thieves by staying informed.

One more tip. I always get in my truck, lock the doors, remove the Club in that order to try to avoid a car jacking.

Let me express my condolences, worst thing EVER.
Hope you do not get it back - had a modded Prelude stolen, raped and returned/repaired; the feeling of violation was insane.. the process was impossible.

    Now to this:

Unfortunately in Canada we can be charged with assault for beating someone who enters our home without consent. In a way I am happy that I did not catch them in the act because I know that I would have not been able to stop myself.[/QUOTE]

    Are you kidding me??
I read this last night and wondered if Canada had a Castle Doctrine like we do down here [guess not] - you can't even beat someone for breaking/entering, that seems a bit insane - - what are you supposed to do, ask them to leave, come on.. that is unreasonable at best.

Do you have any right to defend yourself there?
[seriously - if they break in and are trying to hurt you.. ..]

I keep a 20ga - the first round I rack in is buckshot, the next 4 are sabot slugs so whomever best get gone right quick or else..

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
...^^^... I have well hidden air tags in both of my Toyotas. I know it's not a perfect solution, but better than nothing.

On my last Tacoma I had a "hidden kill switch" which worked very well when parking in a not so good area.

If I someone was in the process of stealing my vehicle ... it is best if I don't catch them in the act.

I saw one of those on Amazon a little pricey $189. If my pro ever shows up I still might go that route unless something less expensive shows up. I live on a fairly busy road so I'm pretty exposed. At least it will slow them down until I can get them with a Louisville slugger or something bigger.

The FOB can be reached in the backseat as option which you see it in the settings in the head unit. If don't want that, then you can change it.

No matter what type of starter a vehicle has... thief finds a way to steal... PTS, key, toggle, etc.

What if you fill up all blank key spots in the ECU would that make it difficult to run off with the truck the way they did the OP?

To the "casual" thief, the old school is probably easier as they don't possess the technology to clone the fob. To the pro, it's less grunt work (though IDK timewise) for the fob clone.

This re joy rides. A joyrider will steal a shitheap first. My dad's 10 year old car got broken into at the repair shop and several hot rods/trucks were passed up. Similarly my friend's old car was stolen for a robbery b/c it was very nondescript and also easy to get moving.

No vehicle is worth jail. Plus think about this, do you really think these pros might not be carrying and shoot someone if they have to? Not worth my life.

Excellent. Secure yourself first before getting moving
