Hello there, just taking a big big punt. I wonder if anyone has a similar key and could give me the number so I can order one. I did cut one at Home Depot but it is too worn to be effective.
    Maybe I get lucky....

Here I leave you with an anecdote:
I bought a 1981 BMW R80G/S in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2009 and kept.
    Then I bought a 1984 BMW R80ST in Hamburg Germany in 2012.
Both motorcycles had exactly the same key.

Many thanks to all in this great forum.

the variations in the wafers are so slight that it would be trial an error in getting a key cut from a wafer chart. I dont recall ever seeing a Tacoma with a locking glove box but if you do have one that is the easiest to take out to get a key made from that cylinder. The next easiest is the locking gas door if you have one. One problem I have had in trying to do what you are attempting is that the key is steel and the wafers are a softer material and they wear together so even if you get a pristine new key the wafers might be so worn that it will hang.

On a side note. If you try to get replacements locks from an auto parts store not all of them can be re-keyed if you are thinking of replacing them one at a time as needed. I hate having more than one key for each vehicle.

On another side note... my buddy has a 2018 BMW road bike... what version, dont know. His key FOB took a dump. The dealer ordered a new key FOB but it needed to be programmed. The dealer doesnt have the equipment to program the new FOB so they ordered a new FOB/ECU set and they too needed to be programmed to the bike via VIN. They dont have that piece of equipment either... 1 month later and lots of appologies he gets his bike back. This is in San Diego and not some back woods small dealer either.

Go to your local Toyota Dealership with your VIN and proof of ownership and ID. They should be able to decode the vin and get a key code to cut the key.

I did this to get the exact key in OPs photo with the etched Toyota logo and all. Cost $7 in 2012

Take to key to a small lock and key store. The automated key machines don’t have the finesse needed to copy a worn key. Someone with a manual key machine can cut that for you. I used to work at HD many years ago, back before the automated key machines were even a thing. I personally cut a bunch of keys that looked like that or worse and never had any issues. It might take a try or two but it’s actually pretty easy.

To add to your similar key comment: the key to the front door of my parents house that I grew up in ended up being the same key for a lock for a storage shed in Guadalajara, Mexico 1300 miles away.

Being friends with Locksmiths makes things so easy.

Pop out the right door cylinder they tend to have the least wear.

I would just get the glove compartment cylinder rebuilt and a new key made

I went from that style key to this one for like $7. A lock shop can cut a working key for you. Or you can do what I did and bring the locks from your doors and ignition into the shop with the new key blank as well as the worn key... they will be able to cut you a fresh key and rework the lock mechanisms so that you’re no longer depending on a worn key to operate your vehicle. They also sent me home with a key code to use if I ever lose my keys and need a new one cut.

    Thanks for all the info!
Thing is, I am in Miami....
Locksmiths are asking me above $100 for an "original" key.
I suspect Toyota will ask for the same.
Taking the locks and giving them to a friendly Locksmith...no such a thing in here...
I have worked several locks myself, even made keys from removed cylinders, not that hard but I do not have the time.
I was trying to get lucky and someone providing me with the numbers for my key.
I will try Toyota for curiosity sake.
Have no gas door lock, was drilled off (separate thread)
Not sure if I have a glove box lock.
Good suggestion the passenger door lock, surely is the less worn.
Amazing how one finds a similar key somewhere somehow.
    Thanks!

Looking for the key number so I can order one without having to pay a ton.
I am trying to get an original key, not to copy the one I have.
    Thanks

I was charged $7 per key, cut from my VIN at the dealer. We've given you the answer, maybe trust us?

I have the same key as you and it was so worn i couldnt open my door. Took it to my local key guy (I used to deliver keys for them so I knew where to go) and they cut a copy that works perfect.

I was asked $95 plus tax at a dealer I contacted
so this is not a matter of trust, dear Paetersen.
    Will try another dealer.
...or you can give me the details of yours. For $7 I order two and happy to pay postage also

Toyota charged me 15.00 a few years ago with ID and registration.

Chevy charged me 95.00 for the same thing.

we cut new keys for customers all the time for i think 15 bucks.. You just need to bring the proof of owner ship in and an ID. Toyota will release the key number and they cut it right there. shouldnt cost any extra
