I did a bit of research before I ordered the radio, but from what I can tell if you are on a major highway one of the weather stations should be strong enough for you to receive. I can let you know how well it works in January. I'll be using a 3' FireStik as my antenna mounted at the tailgate so I should get a decent receive/transmit range.

I also found out that Canada's weather stations operate on the same frequencies as the US ones so that's a bonus too.

    5 miles? You're on crack.

Sorry, that sounded rougher than I intended.

But, seriously. Using bone-stock Cobra 19s and a K40 I could clearly chatter with folks several TOWNS away. Did you miss the part where the county I grew up in was 1500 square miles? I could talk to guys Wausau (middle of the county) from my driveway out in the SE corner of the sticks 20 minutes away by highway, although that would depend on cloud cover.

If you're only getting 1-5 miles you're either in canyons or really miswired something.

If you're using electronic equipment to hunt deer, you are no sportsman. More like a douche IMO!!!

So if I use my truck, a gps, and a rangefinder while I'm deer hunting it's douchey? I'm all for being a minimalist but you might be typing ahead of yourself there.

I put in an old Pace 23 channel in my last truck. That thing could definitely talk a good long distance - WAY further than 1-5 miles. I found it useful for traffic jams on the highway. You just can't listen to 19 with the family in the truck...

CB Radio's and 11 meters are just plain silly. I think the FCC should revoke Title 47, Part 95:401-428, license GMRS by rule, and finally launch a government subsidized program to trade in CB radios for GMRS radios. VHF/UHF radios are much better choice for local communications.

Hmmmm. Have the government take away something that is meant for everyone to enjoy semi rule free, and fairly inexpensive to something regulated?..

    NO THANKS!
Might be one of the crasiest things I've ever heard.

I use a galaxy 98. It can 300 watts when needed. And won't f@@k with the computer in your Tacoma. Talk about radios or frs radios do 5 miles. CB 40 + miles Am. Upper lower side band 100 + miles. A 4 pill or larger will mess with newer Tacoma computer.

I had a cb for a while for road trips, but never did use it much. Listened on every trip, but only proved its worth once or twice with detours around traffic (listening to 19). I finally got off my rear and took the Tech test to get my Ham license. I'm MUCH happier with that set up locally and while traveling.

I resisted for a long time, but I'm so glad I finally did it. I'd suggest that route instead of a CB. Nothing wrong with CBs, but I just think 2 meters is much better.

I think it is great as a fun hobby, but also in case a SHTF scenario and telephone communications stop (which will happen), the CB will be a very effective way to communicate. The only problem is, the chances of your loved ones also having one is slim to none.

You are very incorrect about this statement.

I have talked to people across the country with my old CB. It was in my dad's truck. The CB I had was a Cobra (forgot which model, but decent), and was transmitted through a 4' Firestick.

The location of your antenna has an effect on transmission strength.

I went camping a few weeks ago and one of my neighbors had a samurai. I noticed he had 2 antennas. Any advantage to that? My wife said it looked cool and that I should do that..... I didnt think it looked so great, but if it helps with anything then maybe its worth it. I love having my CB while wheeling...Its saved my ass a few times:)

Using a CB to hunt? Do the deer come a-runnin' when you key up the mic?

Must be those antlers on their heads propogating the radio signal in their brains

A CB sure would be nice to call for help if you got stuck in the middle of no where with no cell service.
