I'm an older guy and I bought my '15 for the same reason that you did. I understand what you're saying.

    But.

I love my Taco because it's a truck. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. The ride and the gas mileage could be better but the best things about my Taco are the lack of superficial crap and that it has a clutch.

The domestics don't do basic trucks anymore.

Insurance isn't bad, I'm older, it's listed as a pleasure vehicle, not a daily driver and I put storage insurance on it for the winter which is all of $50 for 6 months.

No problem. I call myself the ''Rice Crispy Kid" at work because I snap, crackle and pop in the morning.

Equity will only continue to decrease on it, if you don't use it then cash in on the equity. very few vehicles appreciate so might as well put it towards something you will enjoy, you can rent a truck for the obviously very few times you need one. just my two cents

My wife's AWD 35 mpg wagon is also nice on the freeway for long trips, but the Tacoma rules for camping and off road. If you're not getting dirty with it, then you probably don't need it. I like the clearance off road and sleeping in the back camping.

Only time we really go on long trips is if we're flying out of a distant airport. Otherwise, we need the Tacoma for 4wd camping gear and room for dogs. It also swallows sheets of plywood and will take a load or gravel or mulch for yardwork. I can also load junk in it and go to the dump. I used to get all kinds of hassle from the big box stores, loading big heavy stuff on my subaru's roof rack.
