    do it. just put 285's nitto ridge grapplers on mine three weeks ago. they rubbed a bit and i did a cmc. MPGs dropped about 1 per gallon, mostly freeway driving.

    Is there such thing as a 265/75/17? Almost the same diameter as a 285 but same width as a 265. This would be my ideal size I think. I’ve had new wheels in boxes for a couple months now because I can’t decided which direction I’m taking!

    A wider tire is definitely better in soft sand.....wider meaning apples-to-apples width of the contact patch....it helps the truck “float” rather than “cut” into the sand. Same goes for mud.

    Hard, packed sand doesn’t really make a difference once way or another

    Compared to my 1st gen it does....

    But when I want to really go fast I run the sports car.

    Is that from the skinny tire white paper making the rounds?
    I've read it, just not 100% sold.

    I do remember all the parking lot snow shovel trucks growing up had skinnies, but the beach lifeguard trucks here seem to run 265 or 285.

    Most run fat tire quads.

    Apple's to Apple's, a narrow tire in soft sugar sand will do better if it can cut down into the sand and reach hard bottom. If you're in deep mud, no hard bottom... Then more traction is preferred... There's still exceptions to all of this as well...

    I have 3 sand dunes within 5 miles of my house. I live a mile and a half from pavement surrounded by sugar sand. The race track with mud bogging pit is less than 2 miles from my house. I see this daily.

    Again, I like the looks of wider tires. But on a beach... Where you can easily cut into the sand and reach a hard enough bottom, you wouldn't get much benefit from wider tires. And if you're only at the beach a dozen times a year or less, but daily drive your truck, the performance will take a hit.



    I'm thinking of getting 285s for my own truck despite knowing it's not the ideal setup for my uses... But saying wide tires is better in sand is a false statement. There's situations where it could be, but most the time it's not.

    I actually just drove really slow through a very rutted out area and this was just passed that.

    I guess I just need to find someone local with a 3rd gen AT with 285s and take it for a spin. If I hate it I'll know it's back to 265s.
