I have zero desire to argue, but in one post you say a narrow tire is best in soft sand, and in a later post you say with the exception of soft sand.

You state you've been driving in sand your whole life, yet you can't decide?

Not sure where you're driving on sand in Florida, but the beach I drive on will absolutely exceed 110% of any vehicles ground clearance. Dig down a few feet, and your just gonna hit water.

Not my pic, just one I found of a truck on St. Augustine Beach exceeding it's ground clearance.

*That's actually Vilano Beach on just north of the inlet*

You literally highlight half of my statements excluding the parts that explain.

in both posts i said depending on depth of sand or if your tire can cut down to hard ground.

There's obviously times wide tires are better... But it's the exception, not the rule.

Try again. What you call off roading i call driving home. There's no "yet you can't decide" to it. Bring some facts or I'll just ignore future posts. A picture off the internet doesn't help. I can find pictures on the internet of monkeys on unicycles with skinny tires on the beach. Means nothing. Especially when it looks like the guy that's stuck in your picture has wider tires.

I went with 255/75R17's. I love 'em. They are stacked out in my shop. Ya'll stay out of that sand. You track it in and then I gotta' listen to your mother bitch.

I actually based my upcoming lift off your setup. I plan on keeping the 265/70/17 unless I don’t like how it looks then maybe I’ll go 275/70/17. Why no mention of that size?

I do not want to admire the size of my wheels with the inside of my chest cavity.

Obviously that’s worst case but still.

Eddie got new tires last week and went with 265/70/17s and he changed his thoughts. He said from stock to 285s he felt no loss of power and little on gas mileage but after a week he likes the power now. His 285s were not recommend for the TRD pro wheels as they wore out in the center and pressure was set at 30 cold.

So hes happy with the switch back to 265s?

I think I'm leaning that way, staying 265 and it still matches the spare.

Now its "which" 265; the Toyos, the Nittos, the Falken Wildpeakes or the General ATX?

He is happier with the performance of the 265s now after the 285s. I just saw it today and when I first saw it I couldn't tell much difference since his is a long bed. I love the Toyo open country at2 tires. I just put a set on my 4runner. I like the looks better. Try them out they offer a 500 mile trial period. Eddie put the factory coils back on because they were sagging.

love this thread (and title), as I'm 2 months out from replacements, but have been going around in the same circles since i bought the stock rig 3 months ago.

As I'm sure you've seen, performance opinions vary wildly from person to person...some say 285s actually run better whereas others say they need a tune, regear, supercharger etc and it's still a dog!

for what it's worth, today I'm on Team 285! Reason #1) Neither us will ever know how we like them until we actually run them for awhile...and when we do, we'll either like them or decide we don't. If we like them or at least are willing to put up with the downfalls for the AWESOME looks, great! If we don't then we can go to 265 or 255 without regrets. I don't want to spend the next 3-5 years running something else without knowing! Imagine you stay where you are now and then get 285s next time and love them and kick yourself for years of wasted awesomeness!

Reason #2) We only drive 1-2hours a day, so it's just sitting there looking awesome the remaining 22-23hrs! Of course, for better or worse, I've always been into the hot, crazy girls over the homely cools ones...

personally, if you opt out of 285s, l think 255 is your next best choice with the lift.

Look forward for learning where you land!

    Too few to list.
I'll be getting new tires soon and this time I'm going to try the Wildpeaks AT3/W. I had the highway tires (HT) and they were great road tires so that's why willing to try their AT's. I've also had Nittos Terra Grapplers in the past and they were good and quiet as well.

skinnies rock in sand on the Taco, lots of misconceptions regarding a wide tire vs a skinny tire. Gearing is also recommended.
