If it was me, I would probably get a Desert Tech HTI over the Barrett. $1,000 cheaper roughly, and much more accurate from what I've read. Able to swap calibers if you wanted to as well (.375 CheyTac, .416 Barrett)
Take that 1k and put it towards better glass.
But of course you can't throw rounds down range as fast with a bolt action..

    Wife shot it down.

IMO they're kind of cool, but kind of pointless in terms of being practical.

As you are probably well aware, 50 cals are generally anti-material weapons, not necessarily precision/"sniper rifles". The thing that makes the M82A1 great for the anti-material role, is what makes it terrible for most civilian shooters looking for a fun or accurate rifle. The M82A1 barrel moves with recoil which has some impact on accuracy and repeatability AND means you should not mount a suppressor (it will in fact void the factory warranty if you do) or change the stock brake. If you want to put a bunch of holes in something hard fast, the M82A1 is a good choice. If you are looking to repeatedly and precisely hit something at distance, you are probably better off with a bolt action .50 or, honestly, a different chambering altogether.

And the biggest reason to not buy a .50 -- finding a place to shoot it. I own a bolt action and only get to shoot it once or twice a year as there are zero ranges that will let me shoot it and the nearest BLM land with even a 400+ yards of straight, safe shooting is several hours away.

I have this an LOVE it. There are some originally full-auto guns that just don't work (like literally don't work reliably OR just don't make sense) as semi-autos. This is not one of them. Mine is dead accurate and easy to line up with an EOTech on top. I have a few different stocks for it and a few barrels. The best use though is mounting it on a M192 tripod or on a custom pedestal mount I built for the back of my deuce and half. With it mounted on either you can use a crank or slap the trigger quickly to approach full-auto rates of fire and not have to worry about your air drifting off.

    Do it

I have to stick to my lowly .338, .300, 6 dasher and other rounds since CA doesn't allow 50 bmg

Honestly, the .416 is a better choice anyhow.
