Can you help us with these questions?

How long do you plan to own the vehicle in years?

    Where do you live?

How many miles will it be driven each year?

    Any towing or hauling?

The average distance of road trips?

    2wd or 4wd?

Do you like Rockford Fosgate sound systems?

Honestly if you plan on owning a vehicle for 15 years. The GMC Canyon(Chevy Colorado) aren’t going to last. My neighbors interior looks like shit after 4 years compared to mine and he takes care of his stuff. He’s been in the dealership more then a few times. I have had nothing wrong with my Tacoma since I bought it knock on wood. But honestly you came to a Tacoma owners and enthusiasts site to ask which one you should buy. If I didn’t need a bed I would get a 4runner hands down. In fact I own both and like the 4Runner(my wife drives it) better. This is our second 4Runner we had a 2011 and the thing still looked great minus a small stain on the headliner and a few small scratches.

The GMC ZR2 (Bison) is very intriguing. If I was in the market I would be torn between it and the Tacoma.

Chevy and Ford aren’t an option for me, it’s Toyota or its nothing! If that’s not you, you deserve a Chevy!

I’m not trying to be a jerk (I don’t have to try it just happens naturally haha). And everyone is entitled to their likes and dislikes and priorities. I hear you on CarPlay, I had it on a rental recently for a 2 hour drive and it was nice. It’s just not that important to me personally. I’m fine with a phone mount and the size of my phone’s screen.

15 years is a long time. I just checked Kelly Blue Book to compare 15 yo Canyon to a 15 yo Tacoma Double Cab 4wd. The Tacoma is valued for roughly $5,000 more than the GMC. I would run a comparison for your area and option selection. I just clicked through the defaults. No secret that Tacomas hold their value.

You are not in a major metropolitan area with cobblestone streets and huge potholes. No off-road requirements that I see. So you won't be beating the suspension to death.

Likely to get some miles. There is still a stigma associated with domestics with over 100,000 miles. Mileage is not a big deal for an import truck with a solid rear axle.

Not a lot of heavy towing.

    4WD - Part time.

Not familiar with Fosgate so no Nissan exposure.

When I get ready to buy a new car, I try to go drive one that is 2 years old. So I can tell how what it will be like after the new wears off. Then make the comparison from there.

Arrange your own financing and don't be swayed by the dealer subvention loans that are like 0% for x months. They do that to move inventory that is not selling. You'll pay for it at the end of the term with poor resale value.

I have a diesel, I also have a fleet of diesels at work. They require so much more maintenance that it’s almost comical that people who don’t have to use one would consider them.

The capacities are not only bigger, they have additional filtering on the fuel. Each oil change on the big diesels is around three gallons, and two fuel filters alone will set you back over $100. They also have complex emissions systems that are prone to failure and which require costly maintenance. These emission systems tend to shit the bed prematurely if the engines do not consistently reach operating temps. for extended lengths of time. This means they make shitty short commuting or non-commercial choices.

The emission systems are designed to scavenge exhaust gasses, which also leads to costly buildups of soot in the egr and dpf. In the cummins, the required 60k service to clean the egr will set you back around $1000.

The def injection systems have also proven largely unreliable, with problems occurring across every major manufacturer.

Now the exception are the pre-2007 diesels that had no dpfs and that did not run regen cycles.

Yep. Even a stock Tacoma TRD will turn heads and get quite a few "nice truck" comments from strangers. Canyon... meh. Just a hunk of metal with a person in it.
