My son purchased a new ‘18 Colorado ZR2 with the Duramax diesel. Trouble free so far with zero warranty work. No squeaks, rattles, outstanding torque, excellent body panel fit and finish and he gets 23-24 mpg on the highway.

OP should buy a Tacoma, Canyon, and a Ranger to let us know how it goes...

I’ll test drive all three but test drives are kinda misleading to owning a vehicle as all you resale value junkies already know.

I don’t think that buying a GM or Ford is a good idea. You’re asking people to talk you out of something you already know isn’t the best idea. Maybe that says enough as it is? GM is historically unreliable and the Colorado hasn’t proven to necessarily be some sort of crazy reliable truck with no issues. The ranger is VERY NEW and expensive. Buy what you want, but don’t come crying to this forum when the GM or Ford let you down.

I personally think that a LOW mileage used 2nd gen would be a better purchase than all the other options.

The 3rd gen Tacoma has only been out since 2016, and it costs the same as a Tacoma. The Ranger has proven itself over seas, and is just as reliable as the Taco. The Off-Road/Pro Tacoma will be slightly better off-road I think, but the Ranger has (a lot) more power. The only thing about the Ranger that's new (to the Ranger) is where the power comes from. The Trans is a beast, and the 2.3EB is a great engine. Throw a tune at the Ranger and suddenly it almost makes the power of a stock 3.5L ecoboost.

I will not attempt to talk anyone out of a Ranger. I think the Ranger and Tacoma are both very strong options. However, I don't know anything at all about the GMs. From what I've seen, the off-road trims are pretty competent. I don't know about they're longevity, though. Youtube doesn't tell me that.

What's with all the midsize truck transmission problems? GM is getting sued over theirs and the Taco is infamous for gear hunting. The Ranger 10 speed might be my only option without looking at Nissan or... ridgeline.

I think the gear hunting was fixed. My '19 seems fine (for a truck that tries to stay in as high a gear as possible while making no power at low rpm). The ranger could get away with a 6sp and the taco should have the 10sp, IMO.

How hard would it be to put a 10 speed in the Taco? I was thinking about that the other day. I saw Honda and Toyota are working jointly on a 10 speed like GM and Ford did.

God I hope not. Honda sucks at designing transmissions.

Get the Tacoma. Had a Ford for 18 years. Looked pretty when I got it. Problems never dealt with when taken in for service. Usually fixed just 90% of the issue and repeately told me there was nothing wrong. "Its normal to make a right turn when you hit the brakes" stated the Dumb F... Service Advisor". Have had my 97 SR5 4X4 since day one; 5 miles on the odometer. Drive it EVERY DAY. Normal maintenance, no problems. Best part, when I go to the "Stealer" they still know my name, ask about the family, and the Service Advisor and their Technicians repeatedly ask to buy my 23 year old Baby it for $10K... Really, GET THE TACOMA and dont waste your hard earned money...

^Agreed. Until Ford and Chevy wake tf up and get with the program, the Taco is far and away the best truck available in the midsize segment right now.

I've been a Ford guy my whole life. The only problems I've ever had with any of them were caused by shoddy worksmanship, or neglect. I've seen plenty of junk from every manufacturer, and plenty of examples of engineering mastery from most as well.

As of this writing, for model year 2019 on carcomplaints.com, the Colorado has 15 complaints, mostly trans related. The Tacoma has 6, mostly mystery vibration related. Ranger has 3, two mystery engine lights and a wind noise. Canyon has 2, same trans issue as the Colorado.

Take those figures with the sales figures, it looks to me like the GM trucks are in trouble. The Taco is leading sales by a big margin, but the Ranger really doesn't have any serious complaints. The first year of the current gen Tacoma is actually the worst year for our dear old trusty steed, with 150 complaints. Most of those are gonna be the gear hunting that was resolved via re-flash, but it looks like that mystery vibration has persisted. The worst year for the Rado was 2015 with 108 complaints. Most of those are, yep, trans related. I'm pretty sure carcomplaints is not a global website, so it's not fair to count in the earlier years of the T6 Ranger since all of it's sales were overseas. That said, the T6 Ranger is pretty reliable overseas from what I can tell.

I'm not posting that info to debate which is better (though it looks like which is worst is pretty clear *cough* GM *cough*). The reason I posted that is to demonstrate that you cant base ANYTHING on a manufacturer's reputation. If the 1990 Tacoma can regularly and reliably survive a trip to the sun and back, that would make me feel better about buying a used 1990 Tacoma. That has NO IMPACT on how long I think a 2020 Tacoma will last. Just because the 1999 Ranger had some gremlins doesn't mean anything in regards to the 2019 Ranger.

I know this is a Taco community, and I in no way am attempting to belittle my truck. However, I'm open minded and mature enough to see machines for what they are rather than what my dad told/tells me they are.

Side note: after reading the complaints about the mystery vibration, I do notice it very very slightly under braking.

The Canyon 3.6 is much more pleasant to drive than the Tacoma 3.5 auto. Noticeably more power when driving and much more responsive. That being said it is GM and the resale will be less.
