I drive past a Toyota dealer about once a week. Have not noticed any Tacoma's out front. Is that crazy?

I got out of the Ford technician game before the rangers were released - but honestly Ford has their shit together.

Without even having driven the Ranger I can almost guarantee it’s going to have dramatically better Noise, Vibration, Harshness engineering. And the ecoboosts are pretty sweet, and Ford actually knows how to tune an engine (looking at you Taco 3.5)

The Sync system outpaces Entune all day, and you’ll have apple/android carplay

And i never saw random adhesive failures on Fords as i’ve seen on my taco - weatherstripping, hood brace, etc.

Oh and Ford puts an anti-microbial coating on their evaporator core, so actually using the air conditioning won’t immediately result in a funky smell, as it did mine.

Tacoma’s do have more standard safety tech items - requiring high trim levels on the Ranger - and they are pretty righteous offroad. But a lot of things they did engineering wise make me go “huh?” after all my years working with the frankly superior Ford engineering.

so whats the reasoning behind u buying a Tacoma instead of a Ranger with superior engineering?

Tacomas are quirky trucks, I'll give you that, but you know they are going to last forever with few problems. Toyotas in general have always been this way for me... there's always one or two things about them that drive you nuts, but day after day, year after year, they just keep working.

I have no doubt the Ranger is smoother, and maybe even quieter when brand new, but I would bet money that they will never be as reliable or long lasting as Tacomas.

Another thing with the Ranger is doing your own oil changes if you're a DIY type person. You have to remove a tire and remove an access panel to get to the oil filter. They had to put it there due to the intercooler location, looks like a real pain in the ass.

Nothing against ford, I'm a fan of the f-150. Test drove a ranger and it felt to 'car-ish'. Big windshield, hood dips down like a small sedan, just felt too much like a car for me.

The New Ranger is the single greatest vehicle ever made by humankind. It’s amazing in every single way. If aliens came to earth, and asked me what humanity had achieved in all the centuries of progress, I would show them the New Ranger. It’s just that good. God bless Ford for bringing us the perfect truck.

I thought this sales data was interesting. Looking at the whole market -- and not just the slice of the market that spends time in online forums (of course, nothing wrong with that, right? !).

    https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a27358644/ford-ranger-pickup-sales-2019/

"Through April of 2019, Ford has moved only 15,169 units of its new 2019 Ranger pickup, beating only the GMC Canyon (9374 sales) and Honda's unibody Ridgeline (9606 sales)."

"... the segment continues to be dominated by the popular (and also not-new) Toyota Tacoma, 78,558 of which have found new homes so far in 2019. Even Nissan's ancient Frontier notched 24,479 sales in that same time period. For context, the current generation of Nissan's pickup has been around since George W. Bush's presidency."

Disclaimer: Not arguing one way or another ... just thought the sales numbers were interesting and beyond anecdotal.

    Additional data here:
    http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/us-pickup-truck-sales-figures-by-model/

    Tacoma sales:
    Jan: 16,852 / Feb: 18,533 / Mar: 22,798 / Apr: 20,375 / May: 22,832 / June: 20,476 / July 20,416

    Ranger sales:
    Jan: 3,099 / Feb: 2,975 / Mar: 3,347 / Apr: 6,786 / May: 7,830 / June: 264

I understand that the Ranger is new ... so it is a bit unfair to compare it to the Tacoma (which obviously has a long history). But these numbers do look like the claims that "I am seeing Rangers everywhere!" is perhaps a bit overstated.

Even though i cant stand the Ranger, that story was debunked as you simply need to turn the steering wheel to gain access to the door. Our trucks require the skid plate to be removed and then drain the canister before removal so I doubt it's any more difficult..
