Talk me out of switching to 4Runner

So lately, I don't know what it is exactly but I've been lusting after a T4R. Partly the interior roominess, partly the Japan build quality, the 4.0L engine, the fact that it's less experimental than the 3rd gen Tacoma and just tried and tested, it just seems to be a more robust vehicle and something I would want to have hang around in the long run.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Tacoma and would have no issue going to lease-end with it but the urgency comes in when I don't want to miss out on the current gen 4Runner before they inevitably restyle it and give it the same 3.5 V6 and all the other baggage the current Tacoma has.

My question for you guys is (perhaps some of you who made the switch from or to the 4Runner can chime in) will I regret this? I've always wanted a pick-up and while the 4Runner is body on frame it's not a pick-up truck. Losing the bed and the superior styling of the 3rd gen Tacoma I think might sting at first but I'm thinking the 4Runner can more than make up for that in other ways.

No. Your needs are your needs. The 4Runner is a great vehicle. If you no longer need a bed to haul things, the T4R is an outstanding vehicle choice.

If you don't need the truck bed regularly you wont regret the purchase at all.

The fact you bought a long bed would seem to indicate that at least at one time you needed, or expected to need the bed.
I hate packing, cramming, shoving, and otherwise tearing the ass out of a vehicle's interior with shit that should have went into a truck bed.

Plenty of folks around here with both in the driveway...

Plus the 4Runner comes with larger fuel tank. It's getting some interior updates for 2020 including push button start, android auto/apple CarPlay, a larger onscreen dash, and an updated instrument panel.

How is your driving with a trailer?

I seriously considered giving up pickup trucks this time around. And kind of toyed with going the trailer route.

But I SUCK at reversing with a trailer. And it's just nice to be able to always have an open bed with me, especially since I don't work close to home. So sometimes can just pick something up near work on a whim.

The 4runner is supposed to be more roomy, comfortable and nicer to drive right? And can probably haul the majority stuff that you need/want it to.

I also thought about the possibilities of those cargo racks that you attach to hitches but most of them didn't seem that big, which makes sense. In the end I decided I didn't want to give up the convenience of having an open bed.

As others mentioned, if you don't need the open bed then go for it. Even more so if you're good with a trailer. In a lot of ways trailers are more convenient in loading/unloading things, can hold more things, are cheap to own/rent, etc.

I love my DCLB. With the hard tonneau cover, it's basically a giant Camry. I can fit in ALL of the groceries!!

If someone ever wrecks into my truck and totals it, will be buying a T4R.

Meh, I’d definitely do a good long test drive on a 5th gen before final decision. I’m one of the few that doesn’t like the drive feel. They have a hp/tq raise over 4th gens but are ~300 lbs heavier and feel like it.

I really like their interiors, however Japan build quality does not extend to the interior, just same old Toyota-wide interior quality.

What do you need a pickup for? I need it to haul crap and tow my trailer. It's more convenient than having to tow a trailer just to haul something larger that wouldn't fit inside a T4R...well and I already have an Xterra anyway.

You know how when that one guy is so drunk he thinks he can make the dive off the roof so everybody is trying to talk him down? I’m the guy in the background secretly waving him on while mouthing “You got this...”
