T4R has a lot more rear legroom. Fact.

Official Toyota measurements for second row are 32.6 in (Tacoma) vs 32.9 (4R).

Not sure how they measure that. Seat all the way forward?

I switched oout of a 2012 TRD OR into a 2012 4runner trail edition. Love it 180k miles later!! There are times when i miss having the bed, the taco was a great vehicle for the 40k miles i owned it!

I didn't have to put the front seat as far back in the T4R as I do in my Tacoma. Made a big difference in rear fit.

Sounds right given different front seated positioning. 4Runner rear seats also are reclined more than Tacoma so I feel like that also gives additional illusion of more rear space.

My Wife has a limited 2017 T4R, if god forbid something happens to my Tacoma. I will replace it with a SR5 4x4 T4R.

Those numbers don’t tell the whole story. Sitting in the 4Runner, there is considerable more room up front and rear compared to the Tacoma.

Through a year or so of buying and selling cars, I decided to get a taco to suit my needs and lifestyle. I work an office job so commute 20 or so miles to and from work and it gets decent MPG for a little truck but nearly every weekend is spent out in the woods, biking, fly fishing, camping, and come winter, skiing, boarding, and snow shoeing so I needed a bed I could throw all my dirty gear into and keep my cab clean. I had an SUV before this with all sorts of features the tacoma doesn't have, but was always paranoid of dinging up the interior plastics. Sat in an "older" (2018) 4 runner trd off road, and the tacoma and just never got excited about the 4runner interior even with all the taco quirks. The used one I saw also had all sorts of gashes in the trunk plastics that that bothered me which doesn't in a truck. Weird how that works, but obviously got the tacoma, so far so good and I just got back from a camping trip this weekend where a "luggable loo" was involved...sure as shit (pun intended) wouldn't want that in the cab with passengers.

    Workin' on it....
Since I don’t need a bed anymore if I could get what I need to get out of my current modded Taco without losing an obscene amount of money I would get a T4R tomorrow....

Since that is unlikely I’ll be sticking with the green taco but I say go for it OP!!!

    We have both.

4runner has more interior room. Those of us who have them know that it's a night and day difference. I can barely fit in the backseat of the DC tacoma. I have more than enough room in the T4R (I'm 5'11").

As for all the T4R love here....to each his own. I find my wife's 2018 lethargic, thirsty, seriously outdated and the seats fuck my back up on long trips. My wife loves it. So as long as she's happy I'm happy. As other people have chimed in, they keep their value.....

As for the vaunted "assembled in Japan" - ooookayyyy. I'm not seeing any appreciable quality difference between the 2012 Taco, the 2018 T4R and the 2019 Taco. People bitch about the lack of responsiveness in the Tacoma but praise the 4Runner - what? The T4R is a pig. The Tacoma feels like a sports car in comparison....and this is not praise for the Tacoma. The T4R is slow, wallowy and feels heavier than it is. Maybe some people equate this added illusion of much more weight for "better build quality"?

But hey, people pointing out these barely noticeable differences page after page keeps the third gen forum humming along in all its fucked up glory....so let's keep them coming. Apparently it's a dark week in Tacoma World if someone doesn't ask about trading in their Tacoma for a 4Runner at least twice.

Like others have said, it all comes down if you need the bed. I like the fact that 4R is made in japan. My dad has 2 of them, 2003 and 2015. Both are absolutely bulletproof. 2003 actually drives like new, its crazy. Its got the 5 spd tranny, which is proven to be reliable.

If i did not need the bed and MT , i would get 4R over taco any day of the week. Dont get me wrong, i love my taco, amazing vehicle. Ill drive it till it falls apart. Just hope 3.5 with atkinson stays bulletproof. Good luck man!

No you are right the 5th gen is a slug. And that’s coming from someone who loves 4Runners. The 4.0 does 2010+ 4R no favors.

4Runners also have plenty of dumb problems of their own. I can’t speak to 5th gens specifically, but 4th gens experience rusting out rear hatches, occasional exploding rear windows due to issues with back glass defroster, HVAC panel crapping out, etc. “Built in Japan” might afford some extra fit and finish but otherwise it’s no more free of potential issues than a Tacoma.

Grass is always greener. People switching to 4Runners didn’t need a truck to begin with, and I should know, I’m one of them lol.
