I too have toyed with the idea but held back because of the fear of losing money trading and/or selling. My solution to my 4runner thirst is to buy a shell next year and call it a day.

If you're leasing, why care? You're just renting, not owning.
Isn't that one of the very few advantages to leasing? Getting a new vehicle every 2-3 years.

I'd do it if I didn't want the bed so I'm not going to talk you out of anything. Gotta do what you gotta do.

Yeah I didn't want to chime in too much about the 4runner because have only been in older ones.

My brother in law had a 99 4runner that he just traded in within the last three or four years or so. I kind of found his car maintenance habits suspect but that 4runner treated him well in all the years he had it. It was actually still running fine when he trade it in. I MIGHT'VE considered it as a beater but knowing his maintenance habits probably would't if given the opportunity.

And I know someone with an 04 4runner who always shuttles us around as a group. Seems to run great and looks practically brand new. Has decent room to haul five grown adults in. Definitely more room then the third gen Tacoma. Not sure if the interior room shrunk in later years.

Both of their 4runners were big reasons why I went with a Toyota this time around.

I always say how I don't need a V8 and complain how they make things too big or more power than you'd realistically need nowadays. But if they still offered V8s in new 4runners, I might've seriously considered one just for the fun of it. (assuming it wasn't expensive as well)

My wife has a 4Runner which I love driving on the weekends when I don't feel like rowing my own gears in the taco. If you don't need the open bed and or can figure out a trailer the 4Runner is a great option.

Edit - Wait for the 2020s. The infotainment in her '18 runner is garbage.

If the Taco is a lease and you're not stoked about keeping it, ditch it for a 4Runner, especially if you are not maximizing its advantages as a truck (pulling a boat; camping with a shell; work truck; hauling brush, etc. Me personally, I'd go used for the 4Runner. Not worth paying full sticker for a vehicle thats not changed in 10 years. Ditto the Tundra. I am also on a lease and might consider a next-gen 4Runner when the time comes.

Dude changes his name once week, but he’s always a pussy.

It's not that. It makes its power way earlier than Tacoma. It has "power on tap" no need to look for gears it just knows what gear to downshift to Thats what I liked most, Just step on the gas and no matter what gear it's in it does not shudder or wince. It just goes. Torque monster.

Then I looked at everything else and the Ford was the better solution for me once I started adding available options. NO moon roof was a big deal to me. I never used any moon roofs, I was glad the top trim did not have a moon roof.

The other things I liked were the small things Like struts on the hood, power tailgate lock, Steel bumpers front an rear. Steel truck bed, Very light aluminum tailgate, Flawless Andriod auto, SYNC 3 is very nice. I have grown to enjoy the EcoBoost more and more. People looking for 350+ HP can easily get a cheap tune. Since Mustangs use the same engine, there are a lot of people tuning them as well. The drivetrain can handle 300+ HP.

I never look to any of the car mags to do a comparison. I have seen them all over the place. In some "reviews" Ranger is best on others Nissan is best, Consumer Reports doesn't care for the Tacoma much. In fact, that article was pretty tough on Tacoma "

"The Toyota Tacoma is the best-selling midsize pickup in the country, but from behind the wheel, it's hard to figure out why. "Toyota wins all the style points," features editor Scott Evans said. "Thank goodness for that because it has a lot of offsetting to do." It's hard to pinpoint just one flaw with the Tacoma because there are so many."Although the Ranger had lots in common with the Tacoma in the ride department, its powertrain thankfully saves the day. The Ford has the worst weight-to-power ratio of the bunch, but it doesn't feel it. Its turbocharged engine is responsive, and the tight ratio spread of the 10-speed auto helps ensure that power is never an issue, even if the gearbox is occasionally clunky in heavy traffic.

I guarantee you will feel the difference in the Ranger. IF you have not driven the new Ranger, it's hard to accept a clear Toyota bias that sells a ton of Tacomas. In my opinion, Toyota has stopped listening to their customers.

4runner feels roomier might just be the cargo area in back though

    If I didn't want/need a pickup I'd look at a Wrangler before a T4R. Yeah I said it.

I have both as well, but driving the 4runner feels a bit like torture because I cant row the gears. The early torque feels nice though, but it doesnt make up for the extra 500lbs the 4runner has. Definitely feels like a boat.

If I was in the market I would rush to get a 19 though, I cant stand TSS and prefer the antiquated 4runner. Locally I could get one for ~5-6000 off MSRP since they're trying to clear space for the 2020s.

I just came from a 2014 4Runner and to me the 4Runner is gutless compared to the Tacoma. I don't regret buying the Tacoma...I love it more then the 4Runner.

I dont like the Ranger. But that dont mean I can ignore the fact that a tune can be had for cheap and put you in the 5 second 0-60 territory. That would be nice.
