Depends on your condition i suppose, I could've said 95 but then you would've said you'd be dead by 95.

First thing you need to note... No salesman at a dealership is your "friend."

That being said... don't do it.

Here is my best attempt to talk you out of it.

Your 2017 is one of the slowest depreciating vehicles made today.

If we take a wild guess and say your monthly payment is $500 a month, then the 24 months of extra payments are $12k.

So is your new OR worth $12k more than your 2017? Not likely.

When I was looking for a used 2016 the going rate was more than $30k and I paid about $5k more for a 2018.

BTW, if your monthly is higher say $750 then you are adding $18k

I wasn't trying to offend you, just offer up a counterpoint assuming someone were saving for a $30k truck. It may be cheaper to borrow than save the cash up first. However, that is reliant on the assumption someone is saving for a $30k truck. Not whether that is the smartest decision.

I don't need to manipulate numbers to justify going into debt. I could have paid cash. I just used my real numbers. I make more on the cash than I will pay in interest anyway. You don't really know how much a person saves, invests, or anything else. I'm not going to share how much I still save after my car payment unless anyone really wants to know.

I also consider repairs and maintenance as separate issues. Maintenance is required whether new or not. Hopefully, repairs aren't required on a new truck. And I would hope not for 10 years at least. I've had 5 cars in 20 years of driving. I still own 2 of them. 4 of the 5 have broken down on me at some point and I fixed them. Granted, none were Toyotas so maybe that was my fault and I learned from it.

On the point of rebuilding an engine and trans, do you have the time to do it? Can you still get to work while its being done? I don't know, but its a general consideration that could lead to job loss.

I don't think of any of it is black and white and I'm all in favor of people being smarter with money so examples and rationale behind smart decisions need to be shared. You don't have to agree with me. Your methods work for you and I have no doubt you are in great shape.

Isn't every financial decision a calculated risk though?

Coincidentally, I'm at work listening to a Vanguard webinar since our 401k plan is my responsibility.

60?! I'm over 60, and grumpy, but I can still wipe my own ass.

HA! So true. After I "retired", I wanted to be a Toyota salesman. I lasted about 5 months. I definitely sold a respectable number for a new guy, but the culture at the dealership was do anything to grab that deposit. Lie.Lie.Lie. I was proud of the reputation I had and didn't want to throw that away.

I'd like to ask the OP if he, all on his own, noticed that shiny new DC at the dealership, or did his friend or anyone else point it out to him?
A common tactic is where the salesman and the service writer work together. Usually it's when someone is in having more than an oil change done, usually a repair say, over $800, or $1000 on a desirable vehicle- Tacoma, Avalon, Highlander, etc. The service guy will discretely point out the owner who's waiting for his vehicle. The salesman moves in, and chats him or her up about how he can get that person into a brand new vehicle, and will not only give them top dollar in a trade-in of their 'old', less reliable vehicle, BUT will let them walk away from that 'faulty' vehicle and not have to pay for any repairs that are being done. The owner goes from lamenting the fact that they have to pay $1000 for a repair, to smiling at that thought about not having to, and also leaving with a brand new vehicle. The hook's been set!

Had a 17 DCSB At TRD Sport I bought in October 2017. Cloth interior, had sunroof, heated seats, lift, exhaust, tint, and a bunch of other stuff added to it to make it my truck. Come 2018 on the exact day in October, I Traded it for a 2018 DCSB 'MT' trd sport, same color, but with leather, full tech, and have since added everything onto this truck that I had on my 17. Haven't had a single regret, the TSS is nice, and has saved my ass a couple times with the BSM in parking lots, adaptive cruise is nice for when the assholes pull in front of me, I don't need to be so quick to the brake as the truck does it for me (even though I do still jump for the brake just in case). No regrets, extremely happy, and much happier with the MT over that junk AT.

Do what makes you happy. You live once, it's your life, only you can decide what's best for you. Some people cringe over the thought of buying a $300 drone, I went and dropped $1700 on one, and it's my first. We're all different, asking peoples opinions when it comes to Money decisions isn't the way to go. Just opinions on comparisons to things they've used

If I were to trade my 17, it would be when there’s something new I want. Otherwise I’m basically just getting the same thing I already plus TSS aka more gizmos to go wrong.

If I’m lucky I’ll be able to get at least one more manual before they disappear forever.

GTFO with that negativity. We don't need that here.

I did the same thing but 16 auto to 17 manual with tech package.

I really only wanted the sunroof in the tech package, the rest is kind of nice now that I have it except when BSM decides to freak out and stop working (happened twice so far)

Had the 16 for about 1.5 years. Coming up on 2 with the 17.

Yup, 2018 was an odd year for me. I hated the new AT in the Tacomas, but didn't know if I wanted a T4R, Tacoma, BBP or Calvery Blue, Pro or Sport.... So, got an 18 T4R TRD Pro Calv blue, and an 18 Tacoma Sport BBP MT. Not a single complaint. :D though, wife took over the T4R due to me enjoying my MT too much, and barely using the T4R.

LOL, nope. Snow melted off it from me having just driven it. Haven't had it open since December when we had that odd random 50+ degree here in Maine.
