I love seeing people use this saying to try and justify getting a 4wd when the only time they turn the dial is for the monthly maintenance to keep the system lubricated. If we all really lived by this saying, we'd all be living in excess.

I currently have both vehicles. My F150 is the XLT 3.5 ecoboost and it has way more power than I'll ever need. I bought it because the Tacoma really struggled towing our camper. The seats are more comfortable to me and I like that it has Apple CarPlay built in. The only issues I've had from the F150 are that it'll lose the bluetooth connection to my phone sometimes (I'm running a beta iOS 14 so that could be the problem) and the backup camera will go blank every now and then. It's a great truck but it all comes down to your needs.

I needed more truck for camping and hauling things that the Tacoma just couldn't provide

Just depends where you live. Where I live a 2WD pickup is pretty pointless and you can find them pretty cheap too.

I think you're very close to the bullseye here.

Taco is better off road (even if the Ford were 4wd) and has better resale value.

Ford will haul and tow much better, and be more comfortable day to day.

Some people say that Ford's turbo engine is less reliable than the Taco but I think they are about the same (neither is perfect but both are reliable overall).

If the Ford fits your needs, go for it.

    Also, this ^

I'd wait to get your Taco back and drive it around for a bit. No reason to rush into a big decision. Push for an extended warranty from the dealer and drive it for 5-10k miles and then decide

As much as I like the F150, I have to agree with this.

While I do sympathize somewhat with your AT issue, this is the third thread that you're asking about this. It's your money, not ours. Do what works for you.

My internet $0.02 says to get the Ford.

As much as my f150 has flaws. The seats are comfortable. The MPG is better than my Tacoma. One will never have to worry about the box sides, rockers and cab corners taking a shit with rust.

Oh one other thing. I hate the A/C vents.

I drive a 2016 and 2020 F150 for work, they're definitely a step above the Chevys and Rams but are in the shop more than they should be. Battery issues on brand new trucks, a few other relatively minor things.

Although it sounds like you're having that experience with Toyota anyway, you should remember that your situation is pretty rare whereas it's definitely a pattern with the Fords I've driven.

As others have said, it's your money. If you haul or tow more or want more space in the cab, get the Ford, it's a good truck. If you're offroading, care about resale, and are willing to write off the bad experience with your Tacoma because of the overall pattern of reliability (and maybe you shouldn't! It's a really bad experience), keep it.

Wait a bit either way though.

    OP,

I feel for you. I think what a lot of people don't realize here is the emotional impact that something like this has on someone. You get the truck of your dreams, you love driving it, you are into it, you even modify it -- and then, boom, it has a major problem. Sure it is a solvable problem but what has happened is that it has shaken your trust in the vehicle. I totally get that. I prize reliability pretty much over anything else when it comes to my vehicles. I never want to be afraid that when I am driving my car and my family that the proverbial other shoe is going to drop.

The good news is that it was covered under warranty ... but you are not crazy for being nervous about what might be next. I know I would be -- and some of that may be irrational but it doesn't make it unreasonable.

A few comments and one minor plea:

    1) First, for 90 percent of the people the difference in 4WD versus 2WD is not that big of a deal. I live in NY, spend a lot of time in Canada (Quebec) so I have 4WD. But I can't lie to you -- I don't use it all that often and frankly most of the places that I go I would bet that I could get there easily in 2WD. In fact, I know guys who drive harrowing roads in northern Canada, in the snow, with 2WD and do it perfectly while plenty of folks with 4WD get stuck. Driving skill, proper weight in the back of the truck, etc. helps a lot. I prefer 4WD, however, but for the kind of uses you mention, you will be fine.

    2) Ford is not shit. I realize this is a forum full of Tacoma fanatics (which I like!) but that doesn't mean Ford makes crappy trucks. They actually make great trucks and many of them have been on the road for a long time. Some of the engines are good. And for every anecdote about a Ford thing falling off there is a corresponding one for Toyota. Just because the Tacoma is a great truck doesn't mean all other trucks are shit. Given that, the preponderance of data is that a Toyota will be more reliable long term than a Ford. I would also say that when stuff does go wrong Toyota is a much better company standing behind their products. There is evidence of this -- even though there are examples the other way. In short, if you get a Ford it will not be the end of the world -- as millions of Ford truck drivers know.

If 2WD is not a deal killer and Ford is not the end of the world as we know it, what you are left with is a purely emotional decision. What is going to make you feel better? In situations like this I would sit tight -- better to let things settle. Fix your truck. Maybe purchase the extended warranty. But, as Boynoce pointed out, maybe now is not the time to make a decision. Your truck will hold its value and you can wait to think things through ... What you probably don't want to do is make a rash decision that makes things worse....

Good luck ... and please let us know what you decide and how it works out ...

The ford 2.7 ecoboost is about the best motor they build, and that 10 speed transmission is really smooth. Buy what makes you happy, life’s too short to worry about what anyone on here says. I would say if it were me I would buy a Tacoma with manual transmission and live happily ever after.

On the Ford? The vents were one of my favorite features. Until settling on the simpler approach of the Taco interior that is. It reminded me of the interior of early 70's Ford F-Series pickups, which I absolutely love.

You're being taken care of, you seem like you're not to be made happy, regardless of what you're driving, as no vehicle is perfect. I say that respectfully by the way.
