LOL, look around on this forum... most are living in excess. Mod central, buying shit we don't need to get our warm fuzzies. 2wd truck is useless were I'm from, especially when you start talking about using is for hunting as he said he does.

And hes not trying to justify getting a 4wd, hes trying to justify getting rid of a 4wd for a 2wd.

Very well put. Drive style is very important. I drove a Mustang in the winter for a few years and thus learned how to handle 2WD, but I'll take the option for 4x4 any day. The problem with 4x4 (especially in larger vehicles) is that people get too overconfident because they have 4x4. I see a lot of full size pickups and larger in the ditch and rarely see mid size trucks or mid size SUVs in the ditch. Overconfidence has a lot to do with that, in my opinion.

    All solid points here.
I live in a southern state, so snow is not an issue. I really only use 4wd when some roads get muddy during deer season.

I've never had a full size truck, and since I've been driving around the Tundra, I've really really liked the larger interior and more powerful engine.

I'm trying to separate out each thread to focus on major discussion points.
I never like it when a thread crosses multiple arenas.

I was perfectly happy with the Tacoma, until I wasn't. Of course not looking for perfection, just the best fit. My knowledge level of vehicles is no where near as extensive as most people's on here, so I appreciate the feedback.

I'm just giving you a hard time man.

I am sure you realize that you are going to get opinions all over the spectrum and that none of them will bring net new information you had not considered.

Find the vehicle you need and get that. It seems that the transmission issue is secondary to the fitness of the Tacoma for your use.
It is likely that the transmission will be good going forward so you only need address one issue...

As far as the Ford... Well, I would never suggest that anyone ever buy a Ford (or Chev, buick, dodgy, jeep, etc.). I started with European cars back in the day when they were SOLID... I tend to keep cars forever, selling when relocating or when a different tool is needed. I made the switch to Japanese by chasing quality - and fitness for purpose. (of course they must have some character - or high utility) 3 series BMW from the 80's & Z3 COUPE in the 2000's (a rare beast) could not be killed. They held their value quite well. FAST VW GLI was a lot of fun getting sideways - was flawless even though driven hard. Sold at 100k mi + Got 90%+ of my purchase price when sold. Sienna was indestructible; Land Cruiser... -even more so... (my dad has that now) - both of these were the perfect tool for the job at the time. (all but the Sienna were manuals).

I've owned an old mini copper (from the 60's) for 20+ years because it has character... it is FUN. - It is a highway-legal go-kart!

After decades of buying cars, I do not see myself ever owning any of the brands mentioned above... (I did have access to many a chevy / ford work truck along the way... they drove like appliances... THings may change... but I think the odds are not good...
I did start out life as an Engineer - owning crap, character-less vehicles does not make sense...

Work trucks are rarely a good measure of a vehicle's quality.

Question: are you actually looking for reasons to keep it, or just an excuse to trade it? I could give ya dozens of reasons to keep it based on MY experience, but even more reasons to ditch it based on OTHER people's experiences. Like many before me have posted, had I read about all the issues and problems people have had with these, I may not have gotten one. Mine has had not one issue since it's purchase. Sometimes ya get a good one, sometimes ya don't. Happens with every make and model. Now if your NEEDS require a full size, then no question, make the switch.

If you live in the South and snow is not an issue you will be fine with 2WD. Personally, I prefer 4WD for the comfort of knowing that I have it as well as the long term re-sale value. I also confess that having it makes me more adventurous and more likely to push the truck in places that I am interested in going. From the driving you are describing you will be totally fine with 2WD. My old Saab was a front wheel drive and that car went everywhere I pushed it with no issue at all. Good tires, careful driving, a little weight in the back and you are going to be just fine on a few muddy roads.

If you don't mind me saying it, I think you already know what you want to do. Sounds like you want a bigger truck with more room and a more powerful engine. I can't blame you for that. I moved from an Access Cab to a double cab because it was getting tight with the wife, the growing monster of a kid, one dog and another dog coming. On long trips I felt like I was going to lose my mind. So I got the double cab (2020 TRD OR). Love it. Great truck, etc. Until I was at the dealer and sat in the Tundra ... Not going to lie ... I could have traded in the TRD OR on the spot (except I am not prone to rash decisions). But the luxury, the space, etc. That I don't really "need" but oh it was tempting.

Here is what I would do. Get the truck fixed. Find out its value. Really drive the Tundra. Then the Ford. Ask for pricing on a trade in and see what the numbers say. That might help you.

I also appreciate you hanging in there and continuing the discussion. You might have considered all of these viewpoints but it is good to get a bunch of different opinions. I know it helps me when thinking about what to do with my Tacoma ... that's why a lot of us are here ...
