Definitely for this is they could keep the Toyota reliability. Turbo and hybrid combo makes me jumpy, but I've always driven NA, so I could be wrong.

I average 17-19 in my Taco and 20-22 in our 4Runner both have the 4L. There are differences somehow with each, I'm not schooled on what all those are to be able to mention them here.

I am glad Toyota is realizing more needs to be done with their powertrains. Let's face it, the 3.5 was a quick and cheap way to squeeze a couple more MPG out of the Tacoma. They basically threw a parts bin Lexus motor in it, tinkered with the tuning, and called it a day.
I was immediately concerned the first time I drove the gen 3. The manuals I drove were nice due to gearing, but the auto just felt dead.
I am guessing Ford will put a 2.3 EcoBoost into the new Ranger. Using the 2.7 would have too much overlap with the f-150 and we know Ford is already very afraid of the Ranger cannibalizing F-150 sales (their sacred cow).
You know things have to be bad for Toyota to even consider changing a powertrain mid life-cycle. The past two gens of Tacoma have had no powertrain changes and each cycle was around a decade.
Competition is a good thing. Makes people up their game!!!

2.0T in the IS200t is the worst engine in its class by far. It's on par with a BMW 320 that makes a 180hp even though it's rated at 241hp. It would make the Tacoma even slower than it is now.

To be fair, they never mentioned any time frame for these possible updates.

Toyota might introduce the change at the same time the ranger comes rather than be reactive to the situation. At least I hope that's what they do This is going to be interesting to watch unfold. If they do change/add engine option I'll be trading up

That is true, but car companies don't really let this info out unless it's coming down the pipe in the relatively near future. They don't want people holding off on buying a new Tacoma if it's happening in 5 years.

My wife has a 2017 Civic Si with the same(small changes in turbo, etc.) 1.5 liter turbocharged 4. I am blown away at that tiny engine, tons of torque down low and still gets 40 mpg highway!

I am a fan of turbos now. I was in Scotland last month on vacation and rented a right-hand drive manual Ranger. Had the 2.2 Turbo Diesel (there is a 3.2 available too). It had absolutely GREAT power and gobs of low-end torque. Didn't really even feel the turbo lag. Got over 30 mpg (US not Imperial). Such a shame we can't get these trucks here. I fell in love with this thing even though it was a Ford.

The ultimate test bed for small displacement turbo hybrids right now is Formula 1 , the current F1 power unit is a 1.6L V6 turbo hybrid making 950bhp , 160 of which comes from the dual energy recovery systems with Mercedes' power unit breaking 50% thermal effeciency recently

The key sentence appears to be: "Now, the Tacoma was completely redone"
They're working on the Tundra/Sequoia and the 4Runner. 4Runner could indeed get something new and special that we won't ever see in the Taco. Remember the 4Runner got the dual vvt-i engine while the Taco didn't. Made more power, didn't use more gas and the taco stayed the only application of the single vvt engine while every other application of the 4.0 had the better engine.

Don't me wrong, if they came along with a 2.4L turbo or some awesome hybrid engine I would be completely jealous I didn't have it.

I vote for a hydrostatic drive system with a hybrid electric engine used to power the the hydraulic pumps.

If they give the old Tacoma more power they may have to upgrade to those fancy rear disk brakes...:fingerscrossed:

Eh they will probably just enlarge the rear drums...lol

Its gonna be a while. I don't think Toyota sees the motor on the Taco an issue. If anything, they should just change the gearing. Those who've driven the MT can attest its not the motor.

Turbo's are great, but you'll always be taking a hit on reliability down the line. There's always going to be that balance of power vs reliability thought its been getting better now. Same reason why most Ford mechanics swear by the 5.0, because those in that industry simply won't trust the Ecoboost. The 5.0 is tried and true as far as Ford engines go.

I rather Toyota come up with an updated 4.0 V6, shoot for about 325Hp and get the gearing up a little and be done with it. (I doubt they will though)

    all tore up already
Bring on the plug in taco! T8 volvos are torquey as shit and get over 50mpge in a 5000 pound awd suv, just keep the manual please. Seriously though 400hp and nearly 500ft pounds out of a 2.0 turbo supercharged hybrid. Id take that in a heartbeat in the tacoma (just dont do volvo's e-axle)

High torque at low rpm is what makes a truck a truck. I drive a truck with a car engine.

The RAV4 hybrid I was stuck driving while the Taco was in recall couldn't even reliably do 30 mpg. A Taco hybrid would struggle significantly.
