Have a 2020 quicksand off road. Everything is stock and was looking at lifting it and replacing rims with all black rims. I don't do much off-road until hunting season. Plan on going either recon grappler or ridge grapplers. What size rims? 17? Tire size with lift? Probably just a 1 in lift but I want a good lift but doesn't have to be top notch. I simply have no idea about lifts lol

If I were you and obviously this is just my opinion. I’d start out with a good set of A/T tires first and keep your stock wheels or upgrade to a set of trd pro tacoma wheels since you like black wheels. Use that setup first during hunting season and see if that setup gets you where you need to go. As many on here have posted before, these trucks are very capable out of the box. If after hunting season is over and you feel you still need a lift then do it. But 9/10 times you probably won’t. You can fit a 265/75/16 on a stock tacoma without rubbing. That’s the size I’d go with on a set of 16 inch trd pro wheels in case you want to lift it at the end of hunting season, that way the tires and wheels won’t look too small when you lift it. If you decide not to lift it those wheels and tires look really nice in that size also.

Not trying to hijack this thread... that's some solid advice and something I'm noting for my first Tacoma and my first truck. Can I piggyback on this and ask if you'd recommend adding a 5th tire as the spare at the same time? That is if the 265/75/16 fits in the spare under bed area.

Yes. I just moved to 265/70R17's and I did the spare as well. It is always better to run the same size with a 4wd. Especially if you blow out a tire offroading.

I bought the Bilstein 2/1 lift, comes with four 5100's, Eibach coils, 1" lift block and diff drop kit, cost a little over 1K with the coil overs assembled. Since I only do desert roads and some mild trails when I go fishing it should be all I need.
Once my puny stock tires wear out I'm going with Toyo A/T III's and the TRD Pro wheels.
Its good advice to drive it stock for awhile and see whats what, of course I didn't do that, I'm used to driving a lifted Bronco(a 95 not a new one)and it felt like I was sitting on the ground in the Tacoma so I new I wanted somewhat of a lift.
Probably going to use Icon AAL's eventually

The reality is, these trucks are fully capable for moderate offroading right out of the wrapper. But I 100% agree with what was posted above, start with wheels and tires. It'll give you the look you're going for and a better tire offroad. That's the route I went (265/70/17 Wildpeaks on FN Pro FX wheels). The truck looks fantastic. More agressive look, with a tad bit of poke and more grippy in the elements.

If at some point I find myself doing more aggressive offroading...maybe I'll lift....but I really doubt it.

Eibach coils and shocks set on second notch. 1.5” blocks in the rear. 295s Cooper Discovers on 16” Method Wheels. Ride is stiff but over all I love my set up. Also, no trimming but will rub a little off road.

Prior to lifting I ran 265 BFGs on the methods for about 2 years.

Haha. It's true, they aren't the best tire but acting like they're going to instantly deflate when they see a dirt road or a little mud is comical. This type of blathering is why people spend way too much on shit before they even get their truck dirty.

Edit: I also crawled the shit out of my local Target parking lot prior to upgrading to a better tire. :D

no trimming on 33s and you only think you will have a “little” rubbing off road? Shirley you can’t be serious? :bananadead:

edit: I think those tires are Discoverers, not Discovers…it’s written in bold white letters on your sidewall

Well if you only go in a straight line it certainly won't rub! I had 285/70/17's with 16x8.5 0 offset wheels on my last rig (11 4Runner) with eibach springs and JBA arms. I had to do the body mount chop and trim a lot of plastic to make them never rub. And that was almost 3" up front. I know different truck but very similar front end and tire clearance stock. Pretty much every one of the now 18 Toyota trucks I have owned since the early 90's has been lifted. But honestly the places I usually frequent for off roading I can do no problem with nothing more than a decent A/T tire these days. I may lift this one like an inch just to make a little more scrub room for installing some wheel spacers for a slightly more aggressive stance.

Best advice I've ever seen. I have a Sport and go after very mild trails. I daily the thing like most of us. I've been waiting for 3 weeks for method 705s and Toyo ATIIIs(stock 265/65/17). Would you say swapping out the Sports harder suspension to be a good thing to plan on? Stock it is a pretty rough ride when not on a paved surface. I'm pretty sure all the leafs are the same between the Sport and OR. Someone may know better than I..

Agreed. Thinking about a 5th for a full size spare. Looks like I have the room under there.

I also hated how they retained gravel. I would throw a rooster tail of it up when pulling onto pavement for a few hundred yards.
