Anyway, yeah, like @Timbo89 said, the tube is already grounded to the chassis so there's no need to run an additional ground wire. Effectively, the tube is part of the chassis. But yes, some bare metal where the stud attaches to the mount would be beneficial, although to be honest, I didn't make any special effort to remove any paint when I mounted mine. That said, I also didn't repaint the hole after I drilled it. I did however, check that the ground terminal on the coax had continuity with the chassis before I buttoned everything up and installed the radio.

Your radio mounting location is as good as any, probably better than some since the speaker isn't really obstructed. I have mine mounted to the headliner above the rearview mirror...yes, it's mounted ONLY to the headliner. I put a fairly good sized aluminum plate on the top side to screw the mounting bracket into and it actually seems like a pretty stout mount. It doesn't seem to shake or vibrate anymore than any other mount I've seen.

 

And even more of a drive for Travis, lol.

Awesome, thanks! I left some bare metal on the bottom of the tab and the hole is also still bare from where I drilled. All should hopefully work good. Just need to pick up some zip ties to clean up how the coax is ran.

Is yours wired straight to the battery, or is it wired to the cig lighter or even a tapped wire from behind the dash? Is it on a switch?

 

Cig light for me, just plug and play with an adapter

mehh, my cig lighter doesn't work, and I haven't wired up my new one yet

Maybe I can do some of this stuff at @Timbo89 house this Sunday while I supervise, if that is still scheduled

 

I did an add a fuse & tapped into the fuse panel. I don't have a switch, just use the on/off on the radio.

 

Come to think of it, I have 5 open non-relayed terminals coming off my Bussman fuse/relay box that I have already forgot about. I will just run power from that and use the fuse built into that.

Sometimes my brain just doesn't work lol

I have no 3/16" plate but have a ton of 1/8" plate. How much do you need?

Mine goes right to the battery (although it's fused at the battery). When I installed it I was kinda being lazy and I didn't feel like looking for an always-hot wire to tie into. I figured I'd want to monitor the radio when the truck might be parked, so I didn't want to have to have the key on to power the radio.

Haha, i was going to say though about your nice aux fuse panel. That's perfect for this.

Oh, and your ground should be cool. If you have any doubts, just check it with a multimeter to make sure you have good continuity between the radio-side ground on the coax and the chassis. If you do, then you're golden.

 

I've got a 4'x4' sheet of it, so i can cut to exact size. which width would work better for ya?
