How far you drive past "E" depends on road and driving conditions. If you're driving under ideal conditions where the truck is getting optimum fuel mileage it could be 40 miles. Or it could be 4 miles under different conditions.

Another thing to consider when you get to that last 2-3 gallons of gas. If you have to drive up, or down a steep hill all of the remaining fuel will go to one end of the tank and the fuel pump may not be able to pick it up. It is possible to run out of gas with 3 gallons still in the tank. At least until you get back on level ground.

Irrelevant but my 08 Silverado stopped running two separate times before the gas light came on. My taco scared me but never let me down

That Chevy made me want to never own another gm vehicle again.

I only ran out of gas twice in my life that I remember, both times in college. The second time I had a date in the car and we stalled out a mere three blocks from heading back to her place. There was no second date. :anonymous:

I almost had a third time where I counted on a one-horse town as my refuel spot when exploring Big Bend area. The station was closed, 50 miles to the next one. That was fun explaining to the girlfriend why we were cruising 45mph with the AC off for the next 50 miles. :anonymous:

I learnt my lessons. My new E is at 1/4 tank.

When the gas light comes one, there's 3 gallons left.
When the needle points directly at the "E" there's 2 gallons left.
Not what you asked for, but fun to know nevertheless, when the fuel gauge points directly at the "full" tick there are 19 gallons left.
At the 3/4 tick, there's 15 gallons left.
    At 1/2, there's 10 gallons left.
    At 1/4, there's 5 gallons left.

These numbers were determined with my scangauge which is calibrated to my truck and can keep track of fuel used since last fillup. The needle definitely doesn't move at a linear rate.

I’ve gotten 19 gallons in when I’ve driven it on 0 miles to empty once. Advertised with a 22 gal tank, I was curious if my tank average of 22 mpg would get me to 418 or closer to 450 on a tank.

Dumbassery on my part on a long stretch towing with a head wind and guzzling gas like a taco. It seems like theres about 3/4 gal minimum to about 1 gallon after the idiot light turns on and range is at 0.

I don't believe that range would provide an answer to the questions posed. Does that not go to 0....at E? When in actuality...there are a few gallons and mileage still to go.

Same, I hardly go past 1/2 and nearly never below a 1/4. If I stop for something else and have less than 3/4 of a tank, I’m topping off while I’m there,,, besides the parking is better:D
My GF and SIL will stop at a gas station for a coffee or bottle of water and pull away with a 1/4 tank :notsure:

Running on empty, searching for the nearest gas station, only to find out they are out of gas too. Happen just once for me. Lucky there was another gas station not too far away.

Power outage can be another problem. P For gas stations.

I just bought my new V6 this past saturday and it had 7 miles to go when I was test driving it... Not ideal. When we got back to the dealership it had either 1 mile to go or was on 0. I bought it that night but picked it up the next day and told the salesman that I would go put gas in it myself just so it doesn't run out.
I have been nervous ever since that it ran out of gas before I bought, but that is just because I'm so obsessed with the truck and didn't want it running out of gas with 60 miles on it. I hope the reserve tank is a real thing. Anyone ever ran their taco completely out of gas? Is it still holding up?

don’t do it. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank. Consider that extra 2 gallon or so being unusable.

There are some that will continue to run it down 1015 20 30 miles past zero or empty. You will see them complaining about having you replace the fuel pump in the near future.

Assume that last gallon or so sits in the tank below the pickup for the fuel pump, and is more the less unusable.

We need to have reserve tanks on our trucks like on some of my motorcycles… then again turning the fuel off and on every trip would get old fast.
