So only recently have I noticed this kick from the transmission (it seems) when I am braking, I need to further investigate from which gear shift it does that. But, I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this... I'd say its from 3rd to 2nd or maybe 2nd to 1st, kinda sounds like when you engage 4x4 and you hear that small clunk.

its not the normal passive engine braking kicking in?

ever since 2005, the tacomas automatic transmission has been backwards from what we have know for decades...........lift off the gas, and it downshifts, not the usual UPSHIFT we grew up with

Nope, when I depress the brake pedal 25% or more when coasting from any given speed above 30MPH, it will do the clunk

Ive had this happen too for a while now. Going to try taking it in to the dealer today. It’s a clunk from the rear and then a surge from what I’m assuming is the engine disengaging. The rear clunk is my concern. It’s pretty aggressive sometimes

Try retorquing your u-bolts and propeller shaft, and also greasing the propeller shaft. My clunk smoothed out after doing this

Just installed new suspension couple weeks ago so I know everything is torqued and the firmer suspension should mean it’s not axle wrap. Unless I’m wrong. And no the issue didn’t arise after the new suspension. It’s just as prevalent as when it was stock.

It's the trans down shifting. Mine does it when coming to a stop. Feels like it skips gears and searches then clunk shift. It will go from 3rd to 1st since this trans will skip gears to put it in the gear it thinks is right when driving

Has anyone found the solution for this kick that feels like almost coming to a complete stop?
