TAP / KNOCK FROM ENGINE

Mine is a 2012, V6, four door with a little over 28,000 miles. I was taking it to the dealership for the free oil changes and complained to them about a slight knock or taping sound coming from the engine occasionally. The knock seems to be more prevalent when I am idling around a parking lot looking for a place to park. My wife commented that it sounds like a diesel. The tap sounds happens most when I am cruising at a low power setting (low RMP) and put the truck under a load (climb a hill). It sounds like valve chatter. Both the knock and tap are vary faint and I do not hear them all the time--just every now-and-then. The dealer said they could not find anything wrong and did not hear the noise. I finely get the maintenance supervisor to go with me for a ride and he was able to hear the noise. They kept the truck for two days and told me, "Tacomas are known for making this noise, I should try a different brand of gasoline and put some high octane fuel (super unleaded) in every once-in-awhile."

Does anyone else have a knock / tap coming from their engine?

 

Yup, had it since day one 18-Dec-08. Mine's an '09 V6 4x4 with 175xxx km on it today. Seems to be common.
