    G'day all,

In my efforts to get all the materials together to de-badge, paint, and re-badge my truck I'm finding the short pole in the test is the 3M double sided tape.

3M doubles sided tape is available almost everywhere,(AutoZone, PepBoys, Checkers, NAPA etc.) but it has foam between the two layers of tape.

When I look at my, still on the truck, badges it appears there is no space between the badge and the surface it's mounted on, leading me to believe the foam version is the wrong tape. If I'm right, then what is the right 3M tape double sided tape and what would be a good source to actually get the tape? 3m double sided tape is all over the internet as well, but it all seems to the foam version.

    Thanks

Ive cleaned and re-taped many of badges, bodyside moldings, etc... the auto body industry swears by the 3M of which you speak of.. if you manage to get them off without damaging the original tape..(which is next to impossible on toyota emblems) there is a product called 'Kolad' or Colad.. not sure.. but it is about as thin as the paper backing on the 3m foam tape.. if you get them off without damage.. wipe the factory tape with lacquer thinner and apply the colad to it.. if not, 3M tape is your best bet.. just a pain to cut all around the letters and openings but looks normal when its on.

or you could just go to the dealer and but new ones to paint... haha...
But a good tip if youre re-taping... retape BEFORE you paint!!

Or if you forget, hit the exposed edges of the tape with a black Sharpie before putting them back on the truck. :D

make sure you use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat up the truck where you are going to put on the badge, as well as the badge itself. also make sure BOTH surfaces are spotless clean! you should be good to go

Just for info. To date my research is indicates while a double sided tape as thin as as say a regular role of scotch tape may exist I do not now think that's the stuff ya need to re-badge you truck.

I purchased a new chrome "TACOMA" badge and examined the adhesive side. It appears there are depressions corrisponding to each letter and there is doubled sided foam tape in each depression resulting in zero space between the badge and the surface it's stuck on. I also picked up a role of tape as suggested bu bookmonke.

Time for the "acid" test now and I will be sure to follow the suggestions of Detective Dan for removal.

    Thanks for the inputs.

I definately agree that re-taping before painting the badges is the way to go. I just wasn't smart enough to think about that when I did mine.

Not only do you minimize the potential for damaging the new paint, the overspray will also paint the edges of new tape the matching color so it will be less noticeable. :)

I used the 3M double sided tape with the red backing. I cant tell a difference between stock and my rebadged application. I picked up my tape at the home depot.

I used the thick tape the OP is referring too because I wanted the "raised" look, which I like. However, you can buy the 3M tape in a thinner form. Just buy the thin stuff if that is what you want. Call your local hardware store, they should have it.
