I stripped 2 threaded m12x1.25 bolt holes on the bottom of my frame after installing and removing my all pro bumper a few times. When attempting to retap the first one to m14x1.5 I mistakenly used a m14x1.25 tap. Not really any bolts available to fit.

My question is, should I tap it out to m16x1.5 or do something else?

I'd just source some m14x1.25 bolts. Ace Hardware has a good fastener selection or just order some online. You don't wanna go too big and end up with fitment issues. If the m14 tap is good try to use it. If you mess up the m16 tap now you're really sol. If you can get to the nut you can try to beat it off and have a new nut welded on.

Just what nuts are you talking about? Just how did you mess up the threads ?? Using the wrong bolts?

If it is bumper mounting hardware I just get the correct size weld nuts weld them in and call it good.

Nothing worse then having each bolt a different size at least to me.

    Good Luck!

I was using the correct bolt size, but who knows. The weld nuts are boxed in the frame.

Weld nuts get welded flush with the frame and work great.

If you look at his picture posted above, you can see just how much leverage there is on that single bolt. The flange and washer is not flush with the bumper.

With that sort of leverage, it's easy to get a bolt to catch only to wrench it on and chew up the threads because the weight of the bumper is pulling the bolt causing it to go in at an angle/crooked.

Simply put, hold your bumper up to keep weight off the bolts and run them for several threads. Continue to do so for all the bolts, then torque down to spec.

My guess is the OP did none of that.

Some things are just habits i never think about.

I am so used to having the crane supporting things till all the hardware is started.

I see no reason why you cant open up the triangular hole more and put a nut on top of the captured nut and tighten it.

His factory capture nut is still welded in place.

He simply ran a tap with a different thread pitch.

Simplest thing is to run the correct bolt to match the new threads on that single nut.

But if you're suggesting he replace the nut then really, the best route would be going through the front of the frame horn. Certain years required them getting cut out anyway for an aftermarket bumper.

Cutting that front piece out would not only be easy to replace, but also provide much more room to replace the now-incorrect nut.
