UPDATE: Added some velcro strips (soft side) around the speaker cover and it seems to have alleviated the noise in the cold all together. For now at least

Felt around it would probably be more ideal, velcro is just what I happened to have laying around. Good luck, post here if fixes it.

Bump. I've been having this same problem as well, only in the morning when it's cold but winter is rapidly approaching so it's only going to get worse. How do you pop the speaker grill off?

    THANK YOU!

I made an account just to post this. I noticed the exact same thing the other day while driving to work in the cold. Will have to try this out.

Have this same issue as the weather is getting colder at night. Shoved a piece of paper between the cover and column and it fixed it for now, will probably put something in there more like felt or soft side of velcro, just need to know if anyone knows how to pop the cover off?

be careful popping the speaker cover off. I've heard more people snapping the latch tabs off than getting the cover off correctly.

I gave up trying to get the dealer to fix this, so I still have the toothpicks in the speaker. funny convo piece though.

I've had a similar tapping noise in the colder weather. Dealer also said they could not duplicate the noise. However I found out it was coming from my ceiling. Right where the roof meets the windshield on the inside of the truck. I stuffed some foam at the edge of the ceiling/windshield and the noise is gone.

It pops off easy but I broke one of the little tabs when I did it and had to order a new cover. You just have to be very careful. There are two clips on the front of the cover and then two little tabs on the back that tuck into the dash by the windshield so if you pull the cover up too hard it will break the tabs. You want to pop it up just enough to break the clips free then pull it back not up.

I had this same problem. it started around 6500 miles. I took that passenger front speaker grille off and it still made that annoying rattle. After a little more investigating I found that the culprit was a plastic box right behind the dash. I fixed it by taping it tight to the metal bracket with electrical tape and then zip tying it to the same bracket. Its been about a week now and absolutely no rattle.

I recommend trying this first before you take the speaker cover off. I too snapped off one of the tabs on the cover trying to take it off.

Sad, sad when people have to fix their own truck problems that should be right in the first place.
I would document and video these fixes everybody's having. Get in touch with Toyota customer
Service and let them know what's happening and you need reembursement of some sort.

Thanks Matttrow I will give that a try , I have taken the dash off so many times that when I was going home a week ago and heard that noise again I was able to pull the cover around the screen off while still driving!

Took mine to the dealer for the issue once and of course they claimed they could "not reproduce" the noise. I glued some felt around the other outside of the speaker cover, this only worked temporarily as the noise is now back again.

I have the same noise in my Subaru when it gets cold. Same issue too, it comes from cold plastic with interference fit.
