I always let mine warm up for about 2-3 minutes and I've been using Mobil-1 since the first oil change. Mine also does it all year around, it's just louder in cold temperature. I can't imagine an engine with piston slap lasting as long as one that doesn't have it.

Hey everyone my 07 also has the piston slap especially noticeable in the cold weather and goes away as the engine warms up. Really is nothing to get excited about I run mobil 1 ow30 and that really is all you can do no oil will flow better in cold then that. My ford ranger I had had 283000 and had it from day one and I know Chevy has had it on the newer Vortec motors as well. I think it's very common in alluminum motors and really nothing to worry about. Just my two cents

The tolerance level on these engines concerns me since some don't do it, it's clear the piston clearance is tighter. Slapping I'm sure can lead to scuffing and possibly broken skirts in extreme cases.

I retrieved the vehicle from the dealer yesterday, they couldn't find the cause of the noise. I drove it home from work today and after pulling into the driveway, I could slghtly hear the noise- this is with a fully warmed engine. Even if it's nothing to worry about mechanically, it's a known fact that a tapping engine will drop a vehicle's value like a stone. I opened a case with Toyota Corporate- fingers crossed...

Corporate said they will follow up with dealer and make arrangements to have a regional specialist look at it...

I just found out Toyota reccomends 0w-30 Synthetic Oil in Canada during winter. Changing my oil this weekend. My trucks only been doing this when its below 5* Celsius outside, I know a 0w will flow better when cold than the 5w I have been using.

Just changed my oil to Castrol Syntec 0w-30. We shall see how it sounds tomorrow morning.

While I was letting the truck warm up after I changed the oil I checked around the engine with my stethoscope. Couldn't find any knocking sounds, its practically silent all around the oil pan/bottom of the block, up top I can hear the injectors and valve train, sounds normal to me. If you don't own an automotive stethescope I reccomend it, its amazing how loud and clear you can hear different parts of the engine, they are cheap and kind of fun to play with, you can literally hear air rushing through vaccuum hoses, the VSV's sure are loud! No wonder why people try to isolate the ticking from the one, the other actually makes more of a knocking sound.. interesting.

On my 2006 I had TB Spacer, Air Raid Intake, True Dual Exhaust, 2.5 inch lift, Weather Techs, Tonneau cover, nerf bars, Wet Okole seat covers
Hey guys had the same problem on my 06 .
First off get a very trusiting freind to help you with this

Get your truck to simulate the noise and then crawl underneath and place a screwriver up to the bell housing with your ear on the end of it..

My truck had the problem and this is what the toyota tech did to confirm that is was a cracked starter flex plate...

I got it repaired under warranty at around 30k of course i didnt tell them it was after towing 9000lbs 180 miles up steep grades wide open and only going 45mph....

Corporate called and said there's nothing they can do because the dealer couldn't find a problem, even though they confirmed the tap wasn't normal. They said if I have an engine problem out of warranty the prior history will be strongly considered. I can't imagine ever selling it for top dollar with the tapping noise...

Does it sound like this when its warm? If you get down under the truck and listen where the transmission and engine come together, its louder. You may have to turn the volume up to hear it.

I have a 2012 Access cab V6 OR with a noise that sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of my bike when I was a kid. Is that similar to your noise

I just got mine back from the dealer for the same noise and the tech told me it was the injectors. He took a brand new injector and shook it for me and it made the same sound. He said its the ball in the injectors rattling thats why its so loud. We also went and started a 2012 Taco and it did the same thing. I guess I can live with it if a brand new truck is doing it too.

Mine makes that sound too, but that is normal Toyota tick noise. The sound mine makes at start up is separate from that, more of a thud/tap. It has to be piston slap on the very loose end of the tolerance scale, or off the scale. Min will also make a sound after it's warmed up which sounds like a rock bouncig around in the engine, however, that is more random so I can't anticipate when it will happen.

Should mention the change to Castrol Syntec 0w-30 definitely quieted the rest of the engine down.

The odd cold weather cold start sound has lessened, the truck also warms up quicker with the Synthetic.

Mine will have a slight tapping noise when i start it up in the morning sometimes, but only if its really cold. Its a noticeable tap, but its always done it so I have just dismissed it as normal. By the way, as far as i'm aware even if it is piston slap it shouldn't hurt anything as long as it goes away when it warms up. If you could upload a video clip we could probably help more.

Same Problem i head this noise at like 1,200 RPM and on cold days when my truck sat for a while . i just don't even worry about it Toyota isn't going to do anything about it besides rip you off for a service fee that its high and say we don't know . never heard of this problem . when they know that there has been numerous cases brought up about this issue ! i hate the stealership ! they wont acknowledge any issues that's going to cost them money ! ass wipes !
