Seriously? The article that was the original post of this thread, did you even bother to read it? It's the fourth sentence...

The point of commenting in a thread is you are referencing the content of the thread. After you read the article, come back and correct me then.

I did read the article. The whole thing. NYCO posted a link to his own article, in which he claims that TRD Pro will be back in 2017. That is the only place that I've seen claim that as 'truth'. I was just curious as to where he got that piece of information, since he seems to be the only one with it.

numerous times Toyota has said that while they have been on their Tacoma tour...

they said it at Rock Therapy, again at FJ Summit and recently up in Seattle...

I took this line to imply that you wrote the article. Sorry, my mistake for assuming (as usual). Let's all carry on. I for one would love to see what a 2017 Pro is like.

2016 = meh. It's very Toyota of them. It's not amazing in any way and its not terrible. It does its thing with very little flash. I'm not surprised at the lackluster reviews.

I could be wrong, but Toyota recent history with the 2010-2015 4runner where on paper it looks good, emphasizing on the HP numbers and taking attention away from the tow capacity and the RPM at which the engine gets those higher HP numbers. Sighting better mileage. Despite the random few who report decent gas mileage with the new 4runner engine. Mine never got over 17 stock. IMO the less torq more HP engines have to work harder to move the same weight as compared to an engine that doesn't. My 2005 4runner stock with 70k on it got over 20 at one point. Modified it got as high as 15mpg the new 2015 we have with the exact same mods is lucky to see 14mpg. might be able to push it to 15 if I really try but the driving experience would be less than desirable.

I don't know if Toyota is to blame completely though, the new CAFE standards are forcing companies to comply with strict new MPG standards. The way it was explained to me is the American car companies get a pass because of all the government fleet type deals. But foreign auto makers don't get that. IMO it's a shitty way for the Government to control and manipulate the market. Can we say big three? Anyways enough of conspiracy theories. So through these cafe standards we lost the FJC and the engines coming out of Toyota look good on paper but in reality IMO they just lack that feel in the seat of our pants we need to excite us to spend 40k on a new truck or SUV. It's similar to what we went through in the 70's-80's where muscle cars with big engines were cut way back on HP in order to make new smog standards. I believe back then they focused on the size of the engine and you just assumed bigger meant faster. in reality a 6.0 in a firebird had like 150hp which is pathetic by todays standards. I hope we aren't seeing anther wave of that from manufactures.

Back on the Tacoma though, I think it will be a fine truck over all, it will still have the toyota quality we all love. The look will grow on us. I remember when the 2001 tacoma came out and people freaked out about the grill. Everyone loved the 95.5-2000 and the 2001 was to far off. Then the 2005 came out and people jumped up and down and hated it. No one likes change. And yes I agree the grill is hideous on the 2016 but it's up to manufacturers like us to come up with a good alternative, and other manufactures to copy ours:) I'm a little disappointed that the new taco took the same play card from the 4runner play book, I thought the old 4.0 was fine, maybe add some better timing to it and a little more HP and call it good. A v8 or diesel option would have have been nice too. But again maybe aftermarket will step up and help this out *cough URD *cough :)

Remember it could always be worse, it could be a out dated Chevy Colorado.

my thoughts are...if the MPG isn't going through the roof, then might as well bring in the 70 series :D

    V8 diesel gets 20.45mpg combined with 202hp and 317 ftlbs :D

then we get a diesel with a solid front axle and the crowds and calm down about both diesel and solid axle :humble:

I think the big deal with the 3.5L is the torque is delivered in a wider band. 90% of peak torque at 2000 RPM and continues fairly flat up to redline. Peaking at 4600 RPM but of course peak HP doesn't come at 4600 since HP is dependent on RPMxtorque/5252.

Reviews have said the 3.5 feels stronger than the 4.0, and the 2016 weighs 260 lbs more curb weight than the 2015.

That's promising, but I heard the same about the 2010 4runner. Once I drove it I realized it may have had more to do with ass kissing of editors to secure future test drives. :) Where did you get those numbers? I'm curious what the 2005-2014 torq numbers are and where they come in at?
