I swapped mine two years ago and have never looked back. ALH with stage 3 malone tune, 764 injectors, GT1749VA turbo. I put out 132hp and 270lbft at the wheels and have no issues. Truck weighs about 4200lbs loaded up. I'll get pictures of the bay sometime when I'm done overhauling it.

This is my friend's 82 Vanagon Westfalia. It has a 2003 Jetta TDI. It rips compared to the original 64HP non aspirated diesel.
It averages about 27mpg and hits 30mpgs on a tank every now and then. Not bad for a 3200 pound brick shaped van.
The donor car had 240,000 miles on it before the swap. It's turbo just blew a couple weeks ago. Otherwise it did okay.

That's awesome ... Did he make it up to the vanagon trans or the engine trans? ... Those are solid numbers for something with a drag coefficient of a billboard sign lol

Yeah, it's not bad at all.

Yup, stock vanagon 4 speed manual. Unfortunately that transmission is pretty weak. Or at least too weak for the TDI. It got a rebuild when the swap was done but got trashed about 10,000 miles in and needed another rebuild. Also the CV's didn't hold up at all. Luckily those are easily replaced. Apparently a porsche transmission will actually fit in there mated to the TDI. That would handle the extra torque no problem and would have way better gearing.

He's moving to Japan in February for a few years. He was driving the van from Santa Cruz to his parent's house in upstate NY to store it in their bar. The turbo died driving through Yosemite so he trailered it the rest of the way with a U-Haul.
Rather than rebuild the turbo and an old motor he's talking about doing a Tesla drive train. I was joking he can tow a trailer full of Tesla power walls for some extra range.

New (to me) Tacoma owner. None at this time. Stock, but changes are planed in the future.
We have a '97 VW Passat with the 1.9L 1Z (TDI) engine. about 350,000+ miles on it. Original clutch changed out at about 300,000 miles. Otherwise all original including injectors and fuel injection pump. We get about 50 MPG. We have another '97 VW Passat with the 1.9L 1Z (TDI) engine with European Turbo, Exhaust, Intake, different injectors (sorry, don't recall which ones) and about 350,000 miles. Dyno tested at 190+ HP and 300+ Foot Pounds Torque. Mods were done at about 200,000 miles. So YES, they run well and are reliable. The 2nd car can get in the high 50 MPG to low 60 MPG as long as we keep our foot out of it. On the other hand we "had" a '02 Jetta 1.9L ALH engine, Chipped and 351 injectors all done back in '06 at about 82,000 miles. It ran great until about 5/18 when I had a run-a-way turbo. It had 229,700+ miles on it. The ALH 1.9L you can get a 100,000 mile timing belt and tensioner on it, which I had on it. Stock timing belt is 60,000 Mile change intervals. You cannot get a 100.000 mile timing belt on the 1Z or the AHU. AHU 1.9L is mainly found in Canada, not in the USA, but there are a few here in the USA. VW says 10,000 miles between oil changes on 1Z. AHU, ALH 1.9L engines as long as you use the recommended oil.
I'm toying of rebuilding (if I can) my '02 ALH engine and puting it in my Tacoma, but I will need to find a catalytic converter, specifically built for the VW Diesel engines, to install if I do the swap. I saved the computer from the car when I pulled the engine. A manual injection pump, instead if the electronic controlled one, can be installed. There are 10mm, 11mm, and 12mm pumps. 12mm came in the ALH automatic cars. 11mm came in the ALH standard transmission cars. There are several websites, tdiclub.com (for one), that have the information. There are several sited that are out there to find adapter plates to mount the 1Z or ALH engines to Toyota standard transmissions.
Good luck, do your research. I think you can do it.

Excuse the wiring mess, but this is an 03 ALH in my 03 Tacoma. They fit very well, aside from needing to notch the oil pan. Wouldn't recommend this swap to someone who doesn't have either a) fabrication skills and a welder or b) a friend with fabrication skills and a welder. These swaps arent cheap either. A proper one will easily cost between $5000-$7000 depending on what you do for upgrades, who builds your stuff, etc.

Bumping this thread because it’s been on my mind as a long term goal for my 2nd gen, if the 4 liter ever dies.
My truck is a bit heavier and i’m just considering all aspects of it. Thanks for the info guys.

The 2nd Gen would really struggle with this size of engine. I mean it would be useable but down low would be tough until the turbo kicks in enough to push the torque up.

Honestly if you can't do a bunch of fabrication work yourself at this point you may was well just buy a used Diesel Colorado in a couple of years. It's a neat project but probably not for everyone.

That is sweet!!! Even as a seasoned mechanic, you don't realize the test that kind of swap puts you through till you are falling asleep under the truck. Well done!

That's what my dad would get with the older 1.9

Didn't they get 70 mpg out of a tdi golf coast to coast and break some record
