Any other teachers on here? Thought it would be great if we can have our own spot to talk about ideas, job leads, general classroom help, and anything in between. Or just vent about that one student or staff member. We all know theirs one in every school.

Ha! PE and math teacher. Don't really need to worry about spelling to much.

I guessed that you were a PE teacher with the username. I really hoped you weren't an English teacher. Just squeezing your shoes, welcome to TW.

I retired after the 2009-2010 school year. I started teaching Industrial Arts in 1980. They phased it out and replaced it with Technology Education in the mid 90's. Thirty years of teaching and coaching 2 sports wore me out. I actually wanted to teach another 2-3 years but not coach, the 70 hour weeks were getting to me, not to mention dealing with parents. But budget cuts during the 2010-2011 school year led to several furlough days without pay. When I did the math and figured how much I'd bring home after taking 5-10 days without pay as well as giving up the money I'd have earned coaching vs what I'd bring home retired it just didn't make sense. I'd have been bringing home about $200 more/month to work than I'd make staying at home. I took a pay cut, but I'd have taken one if I'd worked. My friends who are still teaching got their 1st pay raise this year since 2010.

16 years in the classroom. 3 days into my career as a principal. What was I thinking?

Wow! 30 years congrats on surviving that long. I agree with coaching, I enjoy coaching the kids. But the parents on the other hand can be a nightmare. I was lucky and was told to never coach high school sports. The extra pay is not worth it and you are volunteering your time. I stick to middle school and elementary sports.

Middle school football for 10 years. Awesome time. I'd never coach anything above 8th grade. So much more time and hassle once you step up to high school.

LOL, S-U-C-K-E-R!!!!! :p Just kidding, noble cause just definitely not my cup of tea. I feel bad for admins, they have some much on their plate ALL the time. I wonder how they are able to keep it all going. I like having my little domain and perfecting my craft to give my students the best experience I can. :D

I'm the only admin. People literally ask me for money or time off all day long. I had a huge state report due yesterday that was worth a lot of money and I spent the first half of the day dealing with two girls who had set up their own little pot dispensary in the parking lot. Sheriff took them in cuffs. Then the custodian wants 3 days off, the tech guy wants 5 grand for printers, English teacher wants book money, kid gets dragged in with a Taser in her purse...and that was day 2 of school.

No money in the budget for help. I'm a lone wolf. I had a full head of hair 16 years ago. Not so much up there anymore...and yet they still charge me full price for a hair cut.

I'm good friends with my principal, assistant and school resource officer. Between the three of them I get to hear those things daily, but that's a small army compared to what you've got unfortunately. I hope you get alot of support from your faculty because I can't see how any sane person could deal with that much chaos on a daily basis all on their own. I feel for you man!

I'm in a very rural school. No SROs here. If the Sheriff is in the next town, it's a 20 minute wait minimum. And city folk think 3 minutes is an eternity for a 911 call. Previous admin lasted 3 years but he was kind of high strung. I'm pretty chill and good at going with the flow. Like Dory said, "Just keep swimming."
