Axle seal blew out and corroded the brake drum and shoes, after some time and wear something let go in the drum brake hardware, falling into the sweept area grinding away. ??????
Get that brake apart soon whatever is wrong, don't hurt more parts.

This and the differential oil line to lube the axle... Sound like the fluid is moving out of the differential.

Which is why you need to check to see if the axle is leaking and if theres oil on the brakes they need to be replaced

OK...I'm using the jack screws. The drum comes loose but it doesn't come off. Near the end, I'm hearing springs and stuff sounding like they are going to break.

The drum never comes off. Its the same thing on both sides of the truck.

Was there anything I was supposed to do before I started jacking?

Its all chocked. Have never used the parking brake.

It seems like the shoes won't disengage the outer drum and that's why it won't come off

You have to loose the self adjuster screw in the back of the drum

There will be a rubber grommet on the back that you pop out to get to the screw

Yeah, you'll have to loosen them up pretty far to clear a lip that develops in the pad from wear.

Is the center of the drum pulling away from the hub?

Gear oil has a distinct smell...you would know if its gear oil...could be something inside the brake that popped loose. Also even if the axle seal blew out I dont think it would leak upwards, its possible it sprayed up but Id check your brake fluid level. Im guessing shock and the wheel cylinder problem...

    This.

And using a rubber mallet to tap around the drum with bolts threaded through the drum. It'll pop off, usually.

OK I backed off the star wheels and took off the drums.

There's no obvious springs missing or anything. Turning everything by hand, the bearings seem fine

I'm going to start the truck with the wheels off and drums open to see if I can recreate the noise. Is that a bad idea?

Well its not the best idea. Do you have someone that can help you that can jamb on the brakes it something goes wrong or a go pro u can mount.
Ive do it b4 and even 1st gear seems fast as hell in jack stands.
Try wiggling your drive line I wonder if the rubber in your carrier bearing is bad.
Ohh or do your drums actually have brake lining on them? Metal to metal?
    Front brake squeakers maybe?

Put truck in drive still jacked up.

    Same sound

Climbed under, there is a metal plate between the gas tank and the drive shaft

Somehow that got bent and was rubbing the drive shaft.

    I'm such an idiot

Do I need to adjust the star wheels back to where they were before putting the brakes back together?

    Well easy fix then.
    But you still need shocks.
