Sorry I'm sure this has been asked and answered before, but I'm trying to use Toyota website's "Build your Tacoma" feature and it won't let me add both of these packages for a 2020 SR5. Is that because they're redundant in what they do? I can add one of these packages, but not both. I know the Technology package provides for blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alerts. Sonar and Navigation is for parking the vehicle and providing navigation?

I didn't realize the Tech package was an option on SR5s this year. Previously, I think the SR5 had the available parking sonar, but only the TRD and up models had the Tech package. My dad's SR5 has the parking sonar. My TRDs all had the Tech package, which included parking sonar, in addition to blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. So it seems like there's some overlap that prevents you from adding both. It seems like there should be an option with the dynamic navigation and tech package that would include everything. It's possible that there aren't any configurations like that available, so they don't list it as an option. It could also be a regional thing.

Sonar? Maybe acoustic, sonar is for underwater....unless the 2020 is a 007 Bond vehicle.

It's the rear parking sensors. It beeps faster the closer you get to something. On the Toyota build page, the package refers to it as Parking Sonar. I'm assuming they use that name because of the beeping to help the driver determine distance, not because it's the same as what the Navy uses on their subs. lol

Yeah I get it, but it’s acoustic waves in air not underwater....not that I care, if Toyota used that term to separate themselves from other automakers and think its snazzy or fit better within their “Technology Package”, then good for their Marketing Team.

True, it's not the correct terminology for what it actually does, but the marketing folks probably figured it sounded better to people and went that route.

Sonar will work in air. Bats do it everyday.

That would be ultrasonic....that’s what bats use.

Same thing emitting sound wave, receiving the return and determining distance and direction. Different frequency but otherwise the same principle.

Same principle for sure...but frequency is what separates the technology. Sonar is a much lower frequency as sound does not travel well or not really at all above certain frequencies under water.

And water wise, there are critters in the sea that have been using echo location a heck of a lot longer and better than man. In many things we took our lead from the animal kingdom then spent enormous time and effort to imitate it. The only problem with our technique is that it does it without the grace of the animals.

I bet OP never expected his thread to take a left turn into a full blown debate about sonar.

I'm fairly certain you can only add one item from the package list. The TRD's have specific packages that are combination of the others to get what you want in a single choice.

Blind spot is a light on the side mirrors to indicate a car is driving in the blind spot, for lane changing on the highway. Sonar is the parking sensors to indicate the rear bumper is close to an object. Cross traffic is for a vehicle approaching perpendicular to your rear bumper, think backing out a parking space. Radar cruise is part of safety sense, so that's standard regardless.
