:anonymous:Anyone know how well Teflon tape plays with the rear dif. I was messing with my breather and it had tape when I threaded it and no longer has any tape when I removed it. I’m assuming it fell into there...

The gears will chew it up, with no issues...

I assume you mean just the tape, and not the whole roll..

that is my hope. Of course I’m leaving on a road trip today so I can’t flush it. I guess I’ll do it when I’m back.

Should improve friction coefficient at the face of the teeth and net you 1-2mpg.

The tape gets squeezed and fills voids just like it does on tapered pipe threads. If it is doing its job, there should only be bits of it when you remove a fitting.

Note that some items don't get along well with teflon. I can't recall where that was. Gear meshes are not a concern, but bearings and seals might be? Someone will be along that knows.

I wouldn't worry about a little sliver that may have fallen off the treads on removal.

I don't see it being an issue but I would also drain it and put in new fluid just to be safe.

Typically the things that don't get along with teflon tape, is anything with a small orifice that can get plugged.

This does feel like something solidly in @hiPSI wheelhouse...

That was it! It was a question about leaking brake fittings. Banjoes and nipples. Thanks!

Folks wanted to try teflon to seal them, but it does some weird stuff in brake fluid and can block the small ports.

Teflon works fine for this appliication.
Don't use it for gasoline because that will dissolve it.
Meshed gearing will never know it's there, including the whole roll and little plastic container lol.
Teflon tape, in addition to sealing threads, also acts as a lubricant so...
Don't use it on a critical torque spec bolt because it will give a false torque reading and don't use it where you need loctite.
Oh, high pressure applications are useless with teflon.
    That's it. That's all I know.
Thanks for the tag @Trail Limo!

Teflon = lubed threads as far as torque numbers go? Or is it less

It, and any other lube, will decrease friction. Typically about 40% when applying torque. So, roughly halve your torque values if a dry torque is called out.

I didn't know if it was the same. Thank God I rarely have to worry about that with stretch heads.

Brake fluid is horrible. I can only think of a few fluids worse than brake fluid... phosphate and polyol esters.

I hate working with it and got bit on my bike by procrastinating with race fluid. Complete and thorough flushes with a replacement brake master cylinder. Not happy about that.

Not just stretch though. Sparkplugs with antiseize, etc.

    You're welcome!

I'm good on all my personal stuff. I just never use a torque wrench :D. Some of our work bolts are stretched to like 700 bar with a hydraulic stretch head.

    LoL!

If I did that, every bit of aluminum that I have would be stuffed full of helicoils.

The click of a torque is money in my pocket.:rofl:
