This awful noise has been going on and I thought it was just the tacoma ticking. But its gotten way worse.

    Any ideas?

Basically it sounds like bottom end engine.

To rule out anything else I would remove the drive belt and see if the noise continues.

A cheap 10$ stethoscope can help isolate the noise.

Typically I would pull injectors or shut off cylinders one by one to see how the sound changes.

One last possibility is a cracked ring gear, but very unlikely by the sound.

Lastly I'd take off the valve covers to inspect top end as a precaution.

Sounds like a rod knock. If you rev it up a bit and hear the "double tap", then you know it is for sure. It taps twice as fast briefly because of accell/decel and the rod is loose on the crank, so it oscillates up and down, briefly knocking twice as fast as normal. Imagine a bearing on a shaft, where the bearing is now gone so there's a ton of space in between the two, when you shake the shaft, the looseness causes the "double tap".

The deeper, heavier, and scarier it sounds, the more likely it is to be a rod knock. If it sounds smaller, tinnier, and is consistent with rpm, no double taps, it could be something like a top end or accessory noise that's less serious.

Sounds like more than ticking. I have but don't like messing with internals so it's outta my wheel house.

Something to try, pull the spark plugs. Then put a breaker bar and socket on the crank, rock it back and forth. You might hear a tap tap every time you change directions, which would indicate a broken or cracked something. Since the plugs are out, do a compression test dry, then wet. Then a leak down test.

I had a cracked rod, sounded similar, from what I remember. It got progressively worse very quickly, I drove it 3 houses away, turned around and brought it home. It went from a ticking to tapping to hammering in that amount of time.

Give us some info. Mileage? Drive it hard? Well maintained?

Its consistent with RPM all the way up and down. No double taps. It comes and goes, its just super loud right when I took the video. For a while I thought it was exhaust, it has that hollow sound in person.

Its also accompanied by a whine through the rpm range that doesn't come out at idle.

2010 taco. 4.0 manual, driven hard, maintained well. 190k miles. Fancy synthetic oil every 5k miles. Lives in alaska where we get -50 degrees.

you don't need a whole engine, just a short block. That sounds like a rod bearing starting to go out.

I believe a rod knock doesn’t come and go, good news there.

Im really hoping its not rod knock. I thrash this truck, alaska trucks dont live easy lives, but I always gave her all the best. Mobile 1 and pensoil platinum with high quality filters, high end everything all the way. Changed the oil every 5k checked it every 2 or 3 tanks of gas. Even sent oild samples off to blackstone they said everything checks out.

    I love this truck.

rod bearings dont go instantly unless under high stress situations. That to me sounds like a situation about to unfold badly. But then again just my opinion

i had a jetboat that expelled a rod through the block but at a full tilt. Similar noise at first
