Pin the T-stat open when checking. That way you get the trans oil from the cooler in the radiator accounted for in the measurement. When done with the procedure, unpin the t-stat if you want.

Finally got it to work. Took some extra shifts but finally got it. As soon as it the indicator came on I opened the check port and fluid came out. It was a slow trickle for 5 or so minutes before I stopped it.

any concern if by the time I was done the blinking d indicating the fluid was too hot came on?

    My thinking ..........

I usually add a quart to the trans to assure myself than I have more oil than needed.
I pin the T-stat open when checking. I use both the above Check Temp mode video procedure and I check the temp with an ODB II doggle and Torque Pro app. The temps seem to be between 95F* and 115F* for the checking range.
For me, that takes about 10 minutes to go from 95F to 115F because its in the car's own 'Temp Check Mode'.
I usually have the car pretty level and the draining time is about 2 minutes.

The dash indicator alerts and the TPro app are very close in temp agreements. That assures me that the app is reading faithfully with the car electronics.

I have an external/additional trans oil cooler added to the system, making it similar to the pre-2021 Tacomas. To include that oil when checking at the low temp range (95F-115F), I pin the T-stat, because the T-stat opens at about 195F for the trans oil.
    Any comments?
Below is why I added the Trans oil cooler

Not necessary to wait 5 minutes. Once the fluid stopped gushing and forms a thin streams, close the overflow plug.

I miss a good ole fashion dipstick that you could check when cold.

Appreciate everyone’s help. Drove it today and it shifted so incredibly smooth. Of note, I used AMSOIL over Toyota fluid. Love their fluids.

You replaced less than 30% of the total fluid. I wouldn't get carried away ...

Hopefully... The fluid mixture isn't of consequence.
