A can of spray Pam will keep those bugs from sticking, also baby oil applied with a sponge will work also.
If it rains you may need to reapply.

Just carry waterless wash and microfiber towels with you.

I highly advise against taping over your headlights for obvious reasons.

I’m a detailer and I handwash my vehicles. I dont run through autowashes ever because of the paint damage they cause.
On road trips I’m not bringing my arsenal of detailing crap with me. You either need to blow the coin on a professional ceramic coating or make sure to wash and apply a quality sealant on the truck prior to your trip. Then just let the bugs sit till you get home. The sealer protects the paint for about a week or two.

Sticking crap to the paint job will just worsen paint damage because that will just rub the whole trip.

Its like those leather bras. People put them on to protect the paint but the dirt and grime that gets under them will wear right through a paint job and cause clear coat failures and rusting.

that's a good idea, have a bottle of Quick detailer and a bunch of microfiber towels to wipe off the bug splatter and bird crap or everything else that you can pick up on the trip

Great point!! You just talked me out of it. Thank you! The bugs get thick as hell up here in the land of 10,000 lakes, after a trip to the cabin only 2hrs away the front gets covered in the summer. I think I'll do it the right way and consider the ceramic coating or sealant at the least.

I'll second the painter's tape method. I know a lot of guys in the tuner car scene who tape up their cars before a show/meet in order to keep them looking fresh without bugs and stuff by the time they get there.

I added heavy duty dog screen to my front grill years ago and my radiator, AC condenser, trans cooler all still look new with no imbedded bugs or rock chips. Open the hood and attach with 4 clips, close the hood, tighten and clip down to the plastic radiator air dam and the grill area is protected. Lasts about 2 years then replace for a few dollars. As for the paint area that plastic will work great or simply use a dryer sheet and the bugs wipe right off
